At his 3rd try, Andy Burnham has become Prime Minister. Third time lucky for him but I fear unlucky for the rest of us especially after he reminisced about the 1970s in his speech yesterday! The decade that gave us the 3 day week, the IMF bail out, the winter of discontent & when the top marginal tax rate was 98%. No wonder he talked about hope in your heart, you’ll need it to survive a re run of 1970s- for you certainly won’t have a ‘pound in your pocket.’

For all Burnham’s talk of ending factionalism and in fighting, his reshuffle - a brutal purge of those Ministers loyal to Starmer - will do the exact opposite. Punishing loyalty to a Prime Minister is a very dangerous action for a successor to take.
