A short story from my time as Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem. As someone who is originally British, I once hoped I could serve as a bridge between the British Consulate and the Jerusalem Municipality — creating constructive, positive engagement, particularly around East Jerusalem. Instead, meeting after meeting, I found that they had little interest in hearing about the work we were doing: developing the economy, investing in high-tech, building connections, and creating opportunities for the residents of East Jerusalem. Their focus was largely on reprimanding us and telling us that we were “bad-faith actors.” After about six months, I realised there was little constructive to be gained, and I stopped accepting their requests for meetings. So when I hear about the decision to close the British Consulate in East Jerusalem, I can say from personal experience, it really won’t change anything in our lives, because that place had become little more than a mission focused on negative bias against us as the State of Israel.
