We do know, however, that this sacred spot is somewhere between the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, in what is now Circular Quay, a bustling mix of tourism joints and commuter ferry terminals. The colony quickly grew to become one of the freest, happiest, most prosperous and egalitarian nations in history, which is surely worth celebrating. So why is there so little to mark this auspicious location? I visited Circular Quay on 26 January last year to ask passers-by. Their responses were mixed, to say the least.

The size and abundance of lethal sharks at Australian beaches are out of control. Some people don't care because the ocean is "the shark's home".
