South China Sea: the misread decade: Japan’s neo-militarism deepens the scar of war atrocities Japan’s remilitarization has endangered maritime security in the Asia Pacific. Its alliance with the Philippines has not only shown Japan’s ignorance of the international order, but also deepened the scar of atrocities from the World Anti-Fascist War. CGTN explains why the international community should be vigilant on Japan’s military moves.

A broadcast on August 31 marked the first live report from the Gyirong land port since disaster struck the China-Nepal border on August 26. It showed a few key details about ongoing rescue operations in the worst-hit area on the Chinese side: 1. Communications have been restored after an emergency base station was installed about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) from the port the previous day. 2. The ground at Gyirong port is waist-deep mud, on top of layers of sand and rock, making every step difficult. 3. Radar life detectors and search dogs are being used to search for signs of life beneath the debris. 4. A water tower on a hillside is reportedly the only structure still visible, while only the foundation remains of the port’s main building. 5. Helicopters are transporting rescuers and supplies to the port, while crews work to restore the final kilometer of road corridor. Tuesday marks the seventh day since the disaster struck. Amid difficult conditions and diminishing hopes of finding survivors, search and rescue operations continue.

"A huge help": Nepal receives China's third batch of emergency aid aboard Y-20 China delivered a third batch of emergency relief supplies to Nepal on September 3 aboard a Y-20 transport aircraft. The supplies included morgue freezers, medical protective clothing, tents, blankets and satellite communications equipment. Ten DNA identification, forensic science and fingerprint experts also arrived to assist with victim identification. China also sent drones for the relief effort. After a full day of training for Nepali military personnel, police and young volunteers, the drones were set to be deployed at the disaster site. Nepal's Minister Mahabir Pun said, "They'll be a huge help." #mudslide #Y20 #aid #Nepal

China-Nepal border mudslide fully unpacked: What exactly happened At 10:52 a.m. Beijing time on August 26, a glacier collapsed high in the Himalayas. Six to seven minutes later, the ice-rock avalanche it unleashed flattened Gyirong Port in China's Xizang Autonomous Region — then kept going, surging downstream into Nepal. Since then, Chinese rescuers have pushed in by land, air and water to reach the port through a canyon where the road was gone, the river was blocked, and the risk wasn't over. But some questions didn't end with the flood. What exactly happened on the China–Nepal border? Was it just a mudslide? Why was there no warning? Why did it hit Gyirong Port the hardest? And why has the rescue proven so difficult? To answer them, we trace the disaster from the glacier to the gorge. Watch the full breakdown. #mudslide #China #Nepal

Why is the rescue road to Gyirong Port so hard to reopen? More than 100 machines, steel-wire gabions and an increasingly complex operation: crews are racing to reopen the destroyed section of the G216 National Highway despite challenges. As the only road offering vehicle access to Gyirong Port from the Chinese side, restoring this vital rescue corridor remains a key part of operations following the mudslide that struck the China–Nepal border on August 26.

China, Vietnam hold 10th border defense friendship exchange The 10th China-Vietnam border defense friendship exchange began on Monday with the arrival of a Vietnamese naval fleet in South China’s Fangchenggang, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Officers and sailors from the Chinese Navy extended a warm welcome to the Vietnamese guests. The two sides later engaged in friendly exchanges including a sports exchange and exchanged souvenirs. In the coming days, the two navies will conduct the 40th joint patrol in the Beibu Gulf, and such joint patrols have spanned two decades since China and Vietnam signed an agreement on joint patrols in the Beibu Gulf waters in 2005. #China #Vietnam

Chinese Ambassador blasts Manila's "selective" law enforcement In a social media video posted by the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines on Saturday, Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan criticized what he described as "selective law enforcement targeting Chinese citizens." He pointed to the case involving the Sanjia steel plant, where a joint government operation in May resulted in the arrest of around 70 Chinese nationals. The detainees were held for more than a month before being released. Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., who took part in the operation, accused the detainees of engaging in illegal activities, including discharging untreated wastewater into rivers. The Chinese Embassy later rejected the allegations, pointing to decisions by the Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) in May and July to dismiss complaints against the Chinese workers. According to the embassy, the DOJ cited a "lack of prima facie evidence with reasonable certainty of conviction" in dismissing the cases. Jing's remarks are among a series of statements from the Chinese Embassy demanding greater clarity over the details and conduct of the operation. Throughout August, the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines has issued multiple statements questioning the legitimacy of the operation and raising concerns over Teodoro's involvement, what it described as selective arrests, alleged misinformation, and the conditions in which the detainees were held. "Does every time a factory has some kind of problem require the defense secretary to bring in the military to make arrests?" Jing asked, adding that "this is clearly about targeting Chinese people." #China #Philippines #ChinaDiplomacy ChineseEmbassyManila

Historical documents don't support Philippines sovereignty claims. Tensions around Huangyan Dao have continued to rise in recent weeks. As the tenth anniversary of the so-called South China Sea arbitration ruling is marked, the Philippines has continued to invoke the decision in its position on the South China Sea. But archival documents and maps spanning more than a century present a very different historical picture. #SouthChinaSea
