Today marks 15 years since a gunman tried to assassinate me. He shot 19 people and killed six. I almost died, and think of those who did every day. As I look back on the years since I was shot, I’m reminded of how much is possible when we reach across divides and find common purpose. Together, we built a movement to end America’s gun violence crisis and have passed more than 820 gun safety laws across the nation. I’ll never stop fighting. This mission is for Christina-Taylor, Gabe, John, Phyllis, Dorothy, and Dorwan—and every single victim and survivor of gun violence. We will build the safer future they deserved. I’m sure of it.

For five years, I served in Congress from a swing district. Then, on January 8, 2011, a man tried to assassinate me. He shot 19 people and killed six. I almost died. But I fought for my life and survived. Today, I was proud to speak in support of Kamala Harris.

Earlier this week, eight children were killed in Speaker Mike Johnson’s hometown in a horrific act of gun violence. We reached out to him asking if we could discuss bipartisan action to protect women and kids across the country from domestic violence. He declined. Shreveport families deserve a leader willing, and wanting, to fight for their safety. It’s time to put politics aside and protect lives.

10 years ago, I launched an organization dedicated to stopping gun violence. It was one month after Sandy Hook, and I had decided to devote my life to this work. To everyone who has helped @GiffordsCourage in the past decade, you are why things can and will continue to change.

Like so many couples, Mark and I were trying to grow our family through IVF. Then, I was shot. Reproductive healthcare is personal for us, and we’re working tirelessly to elect Kamala Harris because she will fight to protect the freedom to choose when and how to start a family.

In the 15 years since I was shot, Mark and I have faced challenges we never imagined. But we’ve also seen what’s possible when people come together to demand change. Step by step, we have saved lives and made progress. Mark and I were glad to share our story with Good Morning America.

This year, I traveled all over the country with a message for voters: We can end the gun violence epidemic in America. Gun safety is a winning issue in swing states and districts everywhere. I know a safer future is possible. Now let’s get out there and vote for it today.
