Why is King Charles III going out of his way to give a speech in German? What many don’t realise is that the British monarchy has essentially been a German dynasty for the last 300 years. This means his direct forefathers were German princes! It all started because of religion. Catholics were banned from the throne, so in the early 1700s, Parliament had to recruit the royal family’s closest Protestant relative. That was George I of Hanover, a German prince who moved to London speaking almost no English. In fact, the British Royal Family only changed its name to the House of Windsor during World War I. Before that, they bore the German name; House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. But they needed a "British-sounding" name to distance themselves from Germany which had become the enemy.

Fela’s niece, the late Fran Kuboye being accompanied by her uncle while performing. She and her husband ran the the Jazz 38 Club in Ikoyi, as well as the resident Extended Family Band. The club was a favourite Lagos watering hole from the late 1970s to the '90s. Fran was a dental surgeon & jazz singer. Tunde, her husband, an Engineer & musician, is the bearded one on the base guitar in this video. Now 79, he’s now a pastor & runs a church. Fran passed away suddenly in 1997 at 48. Her mother was the only Kuti girl, Dolupo. She was between the eldest, Olikoye the professor, and Fela the third child. Beko was the youngest of the four. Fran’s death was one of the three tragedies that befell the family in 1997; Fela, her and Sola, (Femi and Yeni’s younger sister’s) deaths.

Finally, a Pope who can sing! Leo XIV leads the Lord’s Prayer in Latin, at Mass with the Cardinals earlier this morning. Pope Francis couldn’t sing at all (some say he was totally musically tone deaf). You’d never catch him singing any part of the liturgy. His predecessor Benedict XVI who loved to sing, couldn’t ever stay on key, in spite of his hard efforts. Fresh air!

A confirmation candidate’s worst nightmare is when the Bishop decides to randomly engage candidates in random questions in open church; recite The Lord’s Prayer etc. I escaped this experience as I did not get confirmed till I was 30. But this recent candidate engagement in Lagos is quite a pleasant one; and what a stunning voice the young man has.
