Today in Riga I had really productive meetings with the Latvian Chief of Defence and the Commander of Naval Forces. Great discussions on how we can strengthen 🇬🇧 🇱🇻 co-operation, Baltic security, and our collective defence through NATO and the The Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) Northern Navies.

The purchase of the Finnart Oil Terminal ensures the Royal Navy and NATO will have access to reliable fuel supplies for our warships. It will also become a new mine hunting base for the Hybrid Navy. More resilient, more ready for warfighting.

As a Type 45 destroyer, HMS Dragon will bring world-class air defence capability to the region, strengthening our response to counter threats directed to our allies and interests. To every sailor, marine, civil servant and contractor who helped get her ready — thank you.

The UK and Denmark are close allies and maritime nations. Sea power is vital to our economic prosperity. That’s why I was delighted to be in Copenhagen yday to make the case for a new strategic defence partnership, underpinned by deeper cooperation between our two navies. 🇬🇧🇩🇰

Yesterday’s visit by Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський to HMNB Portsmouth was a proud moment for the Royal Navy. A chance to reflect on the support we are giving to the Ukrainian Navy. Its role in the Black Sea is vital to Ukraine’s defence now, and for rebuilding when Russia’s illegal war ends.

My visit to Sweden highlights the value of close cooperation across JEF maritime allies. Next month, I will welcome JEF Navies to London with a collective shared focus on protecting the High North, which stands as a matter of critical importance.

Our focus as The Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) leaders is clear: deeper integration, higher readiness and the ability to fight together immediately. Very productive discussions today with more to follow soon.

Thank you to everyone across the Royal Navy and their families for their continued dedication and commitment. I recognise the demands of global operations and extend my thoughts to those deployed away from home this Christmas. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
