When I sat down with staff at Pittsburgh Action Against Rape earlier this year, they shared with me how hard it is to provide essential services to support victims of rape and sexual assault on a tight budget — services that have been there for Maria and so many others during some of their darkest hours. And it’s because of their extraordinary strength to speak up that we were able to DOUBLE state funding — a historic $12 million increase in our 2026-27 budget — for rape crisis centers across our Commonwealth.

One year ago today, I visited the White Pine Country Store — a place that means so much to the entire community in Galeton. When I heard they needed help replacing a gas pump that was critical to their business — and the tourism industry in this region — we took action.

This morning, we lost one of our very finest when Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Michael Pahira died in the line of duty in Schuylkill County. I just left Lehigh Valley Hospital – Schuylkill where I spent time with Mike's parents, Patti and Mike, his sister, Jen, and some of his friends and fellow troopers. They told me about Mike — about how great a man he was, about his high school wrestling record, his love of cooking, and his commitment to caring for his mother as she battles cancer. Trooper Pahira was the very best of us — Lori and I are praying for the PA State Police family and our local law enforcement partners after losing another one of their own. I’ve directed flags across the Commonwealth to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Trooper Pahira. May his memory forever be a blessing.

We lost a fellow Pennsylvanian last night: Corey Comperatore. Earlier today, I spoke to his wife and his two daughters. They asked me to share that Corey died a hero — diving on his family to protect them from danger. I’ve ordered United States and Commonwealth flags to be flown at half staff to recognize the tragedy that shook Pennsylvania and our nation last night and honor Corey’s memory.

While my family and I were serving lunch to our local firefighters yesterday afternoon, the chaplain from the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department gave me a letter signed by every member of his volunteer fire department. On the back of the letter, John wrote a prayer for our family from Numbers 6:24-26. He had no way of knowing, but that's the same prayer Lori and I make over our children every night. That prayer is so meaningful to our family — and for John to share it with us was deeply touching. Thank you to John and every Pennsylvanian who've sent their prayers and blessings over the last few days. You have lifted us up and given us strength.
