Cannabis trafficking routes across West and Central Africa are increasingly being exploited by decentralised markets for synthetic cannabinoids and lethal drug mixtures such as kush, driving a rapidly evolving drug crisis. Drug prevalence has risen by up to 10 per cent since 2020, about twice the global average. In Nigeria, one in three affected persons now requires medical treatment, overwhelming healthcare systems. Experts warn synthetic compounds mixed with toxic opioids are spreading from Sierra Leone to Lagos, outpacing legislation as the 2025 cannabis boom fuels a 2026 synthetic drug crisis. President Bola Tinubu jokingly referred to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu as "my dear wife, First Lady, Iya Alakara" during the Presidential Press Corps Dinner on Thursday. The remark comes days after the First Lady faced criticism over comments urging Nigerians facing economic hardship to explore low-capital businesses such as frying akara, roasting corn and selling kulikuli.

From the cabin to the tarmac, it was all-round chaos as a female passenger on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos caused a scene at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Sunday, assaulting an air hostess and clashing with airport security. In viral clips, she’s also seen clashing with airport security before she was 'whisked away' in a bus. The NCAA has since reminded travellers: you have responsibilities, not just rights. This comes just days after popular Fuji musician KWAM1 was hit with a six-month flying ban for an altercation with staff and crew of ValueJet at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Should airlines adopt a zero-tolerance policy for disruptive passengers? 📌 Follow The Guardian Nigeria for stories that keep Nigeria talking. #GuardianNigeria #IbomAir #Kwam1 #Aviation #Nigeria #Airport

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a stern warning to auto dealer Sarkin Mota over a viral video in which he appeared to mock Nigerian civil servants. In the clip, Sarkin Mota asked the AI system in a Mercedes Benz 2023 C300 whether civil servants could afford the luxury car. The car responded, “No! Maybe in 2062,” prompting mixed reactions across social media. His follow-up message — urging Nigerians to “hustle very well” — only intensified the reactions. Reacting, NOA Director General Lanre Issa-Onilu said the remarks were insensitive, especially at a time when many Nigerians face economic hardship. He stressed that civil servants are the backbone of national development and deserve respect, not ridicule. The agency reminded content creators and business owners to be mindful of their messaging, warning that promoting materialism over the dignity of labour sends the wrong signal to a society already under immense social pressure. Do you think the NOA was right to step in? Should influencers be more careful with their content? Let’s talk about it 👇 Stay informed on issues that matter.
