Professor Zi Yunlong, as faculty representative, delivered a compelling speech at HKUST(GZ)'s 2026 Undergraduate Opening Ceremony. He shared that new undergraduates are more than just learners — they are co‑builders of the University. Drawing on its Hubs and Thrusts model that tears down disciplinary barriers to solve real‑world problems, the University offers AI‑enhanced courses and refreshed assessments that value critical questioning over rote learning. He advised students to embrace this newfound freedom while building structure in their personal pursuits. Both research and extracurriculars are vital learning opportunities. He added that faculty serve as guides, not gatekeepers, encouraging students to make use of their professors, challenge them, and lift up their peers.
