Until the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War in 1975, around 15,000 Jews lived there. Almost all of the Jews eventually left Lebanon. From my mom's side, the last name was Schreiber, which means writer in German. My mom's brother changed his last name to Sofer, which is Hebrew for writer. Both their European names were "acquired" generations back when their Shtetls (Jewish village) were forced to do so.
