Many of the houses were destroyed during the civil war because they were located right in the center of the city, on the front line between Muslim West Beirut and Christian East Beirut — the two sides shooting at each other through the Jewish homes. Many of the remaining houses were abandoned and gradually began to crumble. Some were demolished to make way for high-rise towers. From my mom's side, the last name was Schreiber, which means writer in German. My mom's brother changed his last name to Sofer, which is Hebrew for writer. Both their European names were "acquired" generations back when their Shtetls (Jewish village) were forced to do so.
