Dr. Reuben Abati is trending, and I took a moment to find out why. I came across a video where he gave his assessment of the rather rugby-style interview conducted by Mehdi Hasan with Daniel Bwala. As expected, the reactions quickly followed. But what became obvious was that much of the backlash had little to do with the substance of his analysis and more to do with the intolerance some people have for viewpoints that do not align with their preconceived narratives. What many of these online irritants fail to realize is that public discourse thrives on differing perspectives. Unfortunately, a section of the commentariat has been so conditioned to interpret everything through a negative lens that any opinion that departs from that script immediately becomes a target. In a healthy intellectual environment, assessments should be weighed on their merit, not dismissed simply because they challenge popular outrage or the prevailing mood online.
