I used to wonder why someone who was critically ill could suddenly seem so much better. They'd start talking again, sit up, eat, and even smile. Everyone would get hopeful. You'd call the family, convinced they were finally recovering, only to hear they'd passed away a short time later. It always felt shocking to me, but now I understand why it happens. It's called terminal lucidity.
