The label “heretic” gets thrown around way too easily these days. If you profess the Nicene Creed & the Apostles’ Creed, you count as a legitimate Christian. Period. Christians will always disagree about important political & social issues and matters of doctrine. Just war theory is an ethical framework that helps us discern whether engaging in war is permissible, and also how it must be conducted. Conditions include, but are not limited to: just cause, legitimate authority, right intention, and reasonable hope for success. So far, the U.S. & Israel’s war with Iran meets none of them. Too many people have been fed the rhetoric that if you break the law, you no longer have human rights. This rhetoric is not only categorically false, but also morally wrong & incompatible with Christianity. The vast majority of immigrants in America have not broken the law & have no criminal record, and the ones who have broken the law still retain their human rights. No matter where any of us stand on immigration policy, we cannot accept solutions that deny people their human rights, and it’s our duty to demand that our government do better.
