After 1948, 850,000 Jews were expelled from Arab countries, stripped of citizenship, property, and rights. Israel absorbed them, granted citizenship, and integrated them. Arab states largely denied Palestinians the same, leaving generations in camps under UNRWA’s unique inherited refugee status. Israel solved its refugee crisis in one generation. Arab states chose not to solve theirs. Palestinians are still paying the price for that decision.

Sesame Street shared a 48-second Jewish American Heritage Month video about matzo ball soup, featuring actress and singer Kat Graham celebrating Jewish family traditions. Bushnaq’s grandparents were Muslim Bosnians who moved from Europe to Ottoman Syria in the late 1800s. Her family later lived in Tulkarem, which came under Jordanian control after 1948, not Israeli control. Her father then chose to return to England. The video also features the famous “Visit Palestine” poster, which was designed in 1936 by Austrian-Jewish refugee Franz Kraus in Tel Aviv to promote travel to the Holy Land and support Zionist return. The issue isn’t Mamdani commemorating Palestinian displacement. It’s that he uses selective history to erase key context: the Arab war against Israel in 1948, the Arabs who stayed and became Israeli citizens, and the Jews displaced from Arab countries after Israel’s founding. “Judea and Samaria” has been used for thousands of years, including by ancient empires, the British Mandate, and the 1947 UN Partition Plan. “West Bank” only emerged after Jordan seized the territory in 1948 and renamed it in relation to its own “East Bank.” So why do media outlets treat “West Bank” as neutral, while framing “Judea and Samaria” as political or biblical?
