Is Roy Keane an Irish Legend?! Honest to god I’ve haven’t heard such waffle from certain individuals in this clip in a long time…. Ironically enough Liverpool supporters too. Roy Keane is absolutely an Irish legend after earning 67 caps and scoring 9 goals across 14 years.

Plenty of time has passed since Declan Rice decided that he wanted to represent England instead of Ireland. In fact next month on the 19th of February it’ll be 6 years since Declan Rice “declared” for England. It’s fair to say that Arsenal midfielder even today is less than enamoured on the island, with people retaining a vitriolic hatred of him for the “choice” he’s made. As time passes by, I continue to see the situation a little differently to the average Irish Football Fan… Heritage as we always say is a complex thing, increasingly so in the “modern” world, people can have ties to multiple countries for lots of reasons and that’s more than valid. Listen to Declan in the second slide and tell me he doesn’t feel connected to our island? Had Martin O’Neill capped him when he should’ve the story would’ve been over before it started and I’ve no doubt Declan would’ve been more than happy playing for Ireland. Alas, that would not be the case a situation was made of something where it shouldn’t have now he’s played for England 72 times and is only 27. The reason I bring this up? Because, aside from not getting Declan which to be honest I don’t care about anymore. My issue is the repercussions from his decision dig far deeper than people know. Trust was burned and relationships were scorned. From the outside looking in it’s hard not feel legitimate sadness for some of the Irish Underage coaches/scouts who played a bigger part in his development than has ever been said. But as I’ve always said just because we’ve burned in the past doesn’t mean it’s not the correct course of action to call-up players into our underage sides with legitimate heritage. Our International Squad both Senior at Underage has multiple examples of those who were integrated early into the environment and we’ve profited for it. At the end of the day, it’s competitive football, not a charity and calling up these players has little to no impact on our Domestic Game (which needs serious investment). Both can be done together for a more prosperous future. But if there’s players involved with England who have Irish heritage and would like to sample our setup they should be encouraged.

We Need To Talk About Michael Obafemi. Following the termination of his loan spell with VfL Bochum. The Irishman (25) signed on loan for Blackpool who are 20th in League 1 until the season end. A far cry from the expectation levels we’d come to expect from him a little over two seasons ago. Unlike some who are “overhyped” I don’t think that’s the case when it comes to Obafemi. You don’t play for the teams he did at Youth Level if you don’t have something! On reflection though, maybe that constant changing of environment in Academy Football… Tells its own story? But for the avoidance of any doubt Obafemi is a good player, with the talent to play for Ireland again as well as at a higher club level. Pace and Power in abundance, a good finisher and a really sought after profile. At Southampton he was their second youngest Premier League player aged 17 and 199 days in the 17/18 season vs Tottenham. After three further seasons he left for Swansea in 21/22 finishing that spell with a respectable 39 games, 5 goals and 4 assists from limited mins. This move proved to be inspired and we saw him at his best with Swansea scoring 12 times in 32 Championship games. While that was the best individual season of his career that’s where things begun to fall apart. Good Numbers always bring speculation of “bigger and better things” Burnley in his case. Things ended acrimoniously pushing for a move in January of the next season going on loan to Burnley (to be permanent). Hindsight is wonderful, on reflection was it a poor decision by him. Yes but the margins are razor thin at the elite level and it’s hard to comment on having never been in his situation. But he’s not the first, nor will he be the last to do so. Since, it’s fallen apart for Oba, Burnley didn’t work out and the less said about his loans to Milwall, Plymouth and Bochum the better.. I see questions over his professionalism and attitude. No smoke without fire, but it’s not that simple. Having read the reports, spoken to people and watched probably every interview. Oba is a top guy! The primary issue comes down to his decision making off-the-field and harshly his maturity. It’s down to him now.
