Ofogh TV, a channel affiliated with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), mocked the killing of protesters during the January 2026 protests in a televised program. In a derisive segment, the program’s host posed a question about the whereabouts of those killed, asking, “Which refrigerator does the Islamic Republic keep the bodies in?” and presenting multiple answer choices. The remarks sparked widespread backlash, particularly amid reports that the IRGC has recently been placed on the European Union’s list of terrorist organizations. Some reports indicate that Owj Arts and Media Organization, an entity affiliated with the IRGC, is believed to be responsible for producing a significant portion of Ofogh TV’s programming. Shortly thereafter, reports emerged that the head of the Basij Center at IRIB had been appointed as the new acting director of Ofogh TV. The segment reflects a broader pattern within state-affiliated media aimed at dehumanizing protesters and minimizing the gravity of state violence against them.

According to information received from local sources in Mashhad, Qaem Hospital, the city’s main university hospital, has effectively become a site of deadly violence amid ongoing unrest. Sources report that numerous young people have been killed at the hospital, and that injured protesters— including those with pellet wounds—have allegedly been shot after seeking medical treatment. The same sources say that most doctors at the hospital have been detained inside the facility and are not allowed to leave. They are reportedly forced to treat only wounded security forces and affiliated patients, some of whom are said to be non-Iranian, including members of Hashd al-Shaabi and Sudanese forces. Independent verification remains extremely difficult due to the lack of media access and reporting from the area.
