Cup‑with‑Handle: O’Neil vs Minervini 1. Pattern Philosophy - O’Neil Approach — Treats the Cup‑with‑Handle as a strict, rule‑driven base inside the CAN SLIM system. Structure, depth, volume, and position are non‑negotiable. - Minervini Approach — Uses the pattern only if it aligns with momentum, trend strength, and volatility contraction. He cares more about tightness, relative strength, and risk control than textbook shape. 2. Cup Structure - O’Neil Cup Rules — Must be a U‑shape, not a V. Depth ideally 15–35%, duration 1–6 months, smooth bottom, controlled right side. - Minervini Cup Rules — Allows shallower, faster cups if the stock has elite momentum. Prefers tight right‑side price action and volatility contraction over perfect symmetry. 3. Handle Requirements - O’Neil Handle Criteria — Must form in the upper third of the base. Pullback ≤ 1/3 of the right‑side advance. Volume must dry up. - Minervini Handle Criteria — Wants a VCP‑style handle: Tight, shallow, multiple contractions, clear pivot. He rejects handles that are loose or wide, even if they are technically valid by O’Neil rules. 4. Buy Point - O’Neil Buy Point — Breakout above the handle high on heavy volume.
