Today I asked the Government why taxpayers are subsidising poverty pay. The DWP says 1.2 million people are working full-time but still rely on Universal Credit because their wages are too low. I asked whether large employers will be required to report how many of their workers need Universal Credit. Work should pay enough to live on. No one working full time should go hungry. #RightToFoodCommission #EndPovertyPay

Yesterday I spoke in the Westminster Hall debate, secured by my good friend Richard Burgon MP, on banning second jobs for MPs. Being an MP isn’t a side hustle. It’s a public duty. Our constituents expect and deserve representatives whose only priority is serving their communities, not chasing private interests or boosting their own bank balance. Public office should never be a business opportunity. Our loyalty belongs to our constituents, and our constituents alone. It’s time to ban second jobs for MPs. #BanSecondJobs

Last night I called out the myth that immigrants are to blame for the UK’s housing crisis. 1946 – 1981 in the UK we built 5 Million council houses. Since 1981 we have built 250,000. In Liverpool a council house has not been built for 36 years! Blame Thatcher, not immigrants.

Today I reintroduced the Hillsborough Law to Parliament. The Prime Minister promised enacting this legislation would be one of his first acts in office. A year on, he still hasn’t done it. I’m showing him that it’s here and ready to go. It just needs political will.

Today I called out IDS’s selective memory regarding a previous Maccabi game. I clarified that it was in fact played behind close doors and moved to Hungary, because the Turkish authorities would not allow the game to be played in Turkey. #HenceNoTrouble #SelectiveMemory

Last night I welcomed the Hillsborough Law carry-over motion, which means we can keep the fight for the Hillsborough Law alive in Parliament. But it shouldn’t have come to this. Two anniversaries, a full Parliamentary session but still no Hillsborough law - it’s not good enough. We knew there’d be resistance from those who oppose transparency & accountability - and that’s why political courage and leadership matters. The PM promised, now deliver: Adopt my amendments. No carve-outs. No one is above the law. Get it done PM - we have waited long enough. #HillsboroughLaw #JFT97

There is a toxic narrative around who is and is not worthy to live on these isles. Recently my brother had our DNA tested: We are 65% Irish, 25% Scottish 9% Welsh and 1% Danish – and zero % percent English. Scouse not English, you might say. Yet I am fiercely proud to come from these Isles and my great city of Liverpool with its melting pot of cultures built on immigration. That is how I define patriotism. Not by race or religion - which is a road I fear many are taking right now in a race to the bottom with Trump’s America.

Today, on the 37th anniversary of Hillsborough, I stood in the Commons as Parliamentary lead of the Hillsborough Law campaign and with a profound sense of obligation to the 97, their families including my constituent Debbie Matthews, survivors, and all victims of state cover‑ups. I asked the Prime Minister to use the power of his office to make good on his promise to finally deliver a full Hillsborough Law that is worthy of the name. #JFT97 #HillsboroughLawNow

Earlier today I waited to ask this Question in the House of Commons but was not granted the opportunity. So with the 37th anniversary of #Hillsborough less than four weeks away, I’ll ask it here instead: What precisely is the Government’s objection to my amendment to the #HillsboroughLaw? The very least bereaved families, survivors and campaigners deserve is an answer. #JFT97 #HillsboroughLawNow

I welcome the Government’s announcement to carry the Hillsborough Law into the next Parliamentary session, which means we can keep fighting to implement the Hillsborough Law in full. Ministers must now end the delays and deliver the law in full - and end the damaging media briefings during this process. #HillsboroughLawNow #JFT97

As I told Parliament, despite it now being on public record that lies, smears & cover ups were perpetrated by senior police after Hillsborough, no official was ever sanctioned. This is why a legally enforceable duty of candour is such a vital component of the #HillsboroughLawNow

Today I told Parliament that newly released emails appear to show Peter Mandelson working alongside one of the world’s most notorious criminals, acting against the interests of the British people in pursuit of money and power. This is exactly why we need a fully implemented Hillsborough Law to hold those in office criminally accountable for abusing their power. It cannot come soon enough.

Lilia Jakeman is 19. She has a rare form of motor neurone disease. A groundbreaking drug to halt the progression of the disease exists. It’s free to the NHS. Yet her local trust won’t deliver it. Today, I raised Lilia’s case at PMQs, as her family walk from Southampton to Downing Street. Fair access to treatment should not depend on postcode.

Almost 2 months have passed since the PM missed his deadline for introducing the Hillsborough Law backed by families, survivors & campaign groups, even though the legislation is sitting here ready to go. Today in Parliament I told the Govt that a failure to introduce a Hillsborough Law worthy of the name will be seen as a continuation of the betrayal of survivors and families of Hillsborough & all affected by state cover ups.
