Never forget: Ilhan Omar’s family didn’t flee Somalia as the oppressed. They fled because her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was a senior colonel in the Somali National Army of the genocidal communist dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, the regime that systematically slaughtered up to 200,000 people, mostly Isaaq civilians, in one of the worst genocides in modern African history. Her father wasn’t some low-level nobody or a teacher who just happened to be around. He was an esteemed senior officer who commanded a regiment, trained in the Soviet Union, and stayed in the military hierarchy of that brutal Marxist-Leninist dictatorship for years. When the regime finally collapsed under the weight of its own mass murder, famine, and civil war in 1991, the family ran, not as victims of the dictatorship, but as people tied to the apparatus that had just spent years bombing cities, executing civilians, and turning northern Somalia into a killing field. Now this same family is in the US, where Omar stands up and lectures Americans about justice, accountability, morality, and “genocide.” The hypocrisy is sickening. A daughter of a colonel from the regime that carried out the Isaaq genocide has the gall to moralize to the country that took her in after her father’s side lost power. Her father came to the U.S. as a “refugee,” just like Yusuf Abdi Ali, who was accused of war crimes and later found liable for torture in a U.S. civil court. Yet, as far as publicly available information shows, her father never faced comparable scrutiny or accountability. Consider this: Ali was deported from the US only two years ago, after a survivor pursued justice through the courts. It took a survivor’s determination to bring his abuses before a judge and jury. That’s the record.

FUN FACTS: The paper trail for Ilhan Omar’s claimed derivative citizenship in 2000 is missing key pieces, and the age math doesn’t add up. Omar has said she became a U.S. citizen in 2000 before turning 18 through her father: “I became a citizen actually before I turned 18. My father became a citizen and so I got my citizenship through that process.” USCIS conducted a diligent search and found no record of naturalization for her father, Nur Omar Mohamed (or variants such as Nur Said Elmi Mohamed). A Certificate of Non-Existence was issued. Her story of automatic citizenship depends on him having naturalized while she was still a minor. That foundational record has not been located. Minnesota Legislative Reference Library records originally listed her date of birth as October 4, 1981. With that date she turned 18 in 1999, so by 2000 she was already an adult. Derivative citizenship rules then in effect generally required the child to be under 18 when the parent naturalized. She would have been too old. In May 2019, after the age discrepancy drew attention, Omar’s congressional staff asked the library to change the birth year from 1981 to 1982. The library changed it without requiring a birth certificate or naturalization record. Staff noted the original 1981 date came from widely available sources. Official records now list October 4, 1982.

I don’t need to look her up. After a few decades in this city, I’d bet she’s a transplant. People who actually grew up here don’t pull stunts like that, because we know how quickly a random confrontation can end with someone in the hospital or worse. For a few years now, transplants have been competing to see who can stage the most unhinged street confrontation for views, and the city is worse for it. Miami Beach mom left 4 children, including a 2-month-old infant, home alone while she went on a Carnival cruise. Nathalie Belizaire, 29 was arrested on four counts of child neglect.
