Congressman Byron Donalds: "Good morning to all the students at Incubate Debate. Congratulations for getting to this point. Debate is critical to the future of our country. So, number one, I want you to just have a good time. Number two, challenge your own ideas. One of the things that really happens at debate—you really have to know your own subject matter, and not just know it from a talking points perspective—really know the data. Make sure you dig deep. Go three, four, five, six layers into your data to make sure you build a strong argument. Number three, understand the other side. Understanding where the other side is coming from is critical if you’re going to actually have a strong debate—but a strong argument. Listen, the framers of the Constitution—they had many debates, but they were able to come to the greatest document ever created in the history of the world. A document based upon individuals who could find a construct to build a federal government while protecting human liberty and human freedom. So good luck today in Immokalee to all the other high schools participating. Have a wonderful debate. These issues might come and go, they might change over time, but the ability to engage in debate is critical for the future of the republic." Thank you, Byron Donalds!
