Nigerian journalist Mary-Ann Okon claims many Nigerians made significant personal sacrifices to support South Africa during the apartheid era, with children even contributing money that had been set aside for their pocket money. Speaking about Nigeria’s role in the anti-apartheid struggle, Okon said many people donated despite never having seen South Africa, adding that the country contributed an estimated $60 billion (about R982.9 billion) in support of the liberation movement. She also claimed that former South African President Thabo Mbeki and other anti-apartheid activists lived in Nigeria freely and were provided with Nigerian travel documents, enabling them to travel internationally without facing persecution. Okon said this history is taught to Nigerian children so that younger generations understand the role their country played and the sacrifices Nigerians made in supporting South Africa’s liberation.

She says the government has engaged with social media companies to seek their cooperation, adding that it is encouraged by their willingness to work together.
