On Sept 5, 1986 Pan Am Flight 73 landed in Karachi, Pakistan. Four men wearing Karachi airport security guard uniforms and armed with rifles, pistols, grenades and explosive belts, drove a van painted to look like an airport security vehicle to the base of the boarding stairs and forced their way onto the plane, taking 379 hostages. The Abu Nidal Organization terrorists planned to force the plane to fly to Cyprus where they would exchange passengers for Palestinian militants. The flight attendants, led by Neerja Bhanot, alerted the pilots who used an emergency exit to escape the aircraft. The hijackers demanded a new flight crew and later that morning pulled U.S. citizen, Rajesh Kumar, from his seat, brought him to the door of the plane, forced him to kneel, and then executed him with a bullet to the head, dumping his body on the tarmac. They then forced the flight attendants to identify the American passengers with their passports. Bhanot led the crew in declining to collect and/or hiding the 43 remining U.S. passports. As darkness fell the terrorists became more agitated, fearing an assault by Pakistani commandos. According to the FBI, when the power to the plane faltered the terrorists “recited a martyrdom prayer in Arabic…opened fire on the passengers and crew, throwing hand grenades…and spraying the trapped passengers with automatic weapons fire.” 20 additional passengers and crew were killed, including Neerja Bhanot. The terrorists escaped but were apprehended by Pakistani police. Bhanot would be awarded India’s most prestigious honor for “valor, courageous action or self-sacrifice.” In July 1988, a Pakistani court sentenced the four terrorists and an accomplice to death. U.S. law enforcement took custody of lead hijacker Zayd Hassan Safarini in 2001. He pled guilty and was sentenced to 160 years in prison. He currently resides in a supermax federal correctional facility. Against the objections of the U.S. and India, the other four terrorists were deported from Pakistan to Palestinian Authority in 2008. In 2009, the FBI and State Dept announced a $5M reward for information leading to their capture. The case remains under investigation by the FBI.

This has to be the longest standing ovation for anyone or anything I have ever witnessed. 4000 high school students in Normandy, France standing to honor our World War II veterans. This area in northern France has not forgotten the events of 80 years ago. Honored and humbled beyond words to be here with my daughter volunteering with the Best Defense Foundation supporting their mission to “take care of the ones who took care of us” assisting World War II veterans as they return to the sand and soil on which they fought.

Have you ever listened to President Reagan’s Farewell Address? He delivered it on January 11, 1989. It is around 20 minutes long and well worth the investment. You may find it acutely prophetic considering the events of the past decades. From President Reagan’s Farewell Address: “‘We the People’ tell the government what to do; it doesn’t tell us.” “Our constitution is a document in which ‘We the People’ tell the government what it is allowed to do. ‘We the People’ are free.” “As government expands, liberty contracts.” “Thoughtfulness and knowledge.” “Informed patriotism.” “America is freedom.” “Freedom is special and rare. It’s fragile; it needs protection.” “We’ve got to teach history based not on what’s in fashion but what’s important.” “We will never forget what the boys of Normandy did.” “I’m warning of an eradication of the American memory that could result, ultimately, in an erosion of the American spirit.” “All great change in America begins at the dinner table. So, tomorrow night in the kitchen, I hope the talking begins. And children, if your parents haven’t been teaching you what it means to be an American, let ‘em know, and nail ‘em on it. That would be a very American thing to do.”
