One of the more formative movies of my youth, FIRST BLOOD starring Sylvester Stallone , premiered on this day in 1982. Based on the 1972 novel of the same name by _DavidMorrell , the film is one of my favorites. If you have seen the movie but not cracked the cover to FIRST BLOOD, prepare to get to know a character you might not fully recognize and for a story that will linger with you long after you’ve turned the final page. Catch my conversation with the legendary David Morrell on the Danger Close Podcast. Have you watched the film AND read the book?

This has to be the longest standing ovation for anyone or anything I have ever witnessed. 4000 high school students in Normandy, France standing to honor our World War II veterans. This area in northern France has not forgotten the events of 80 years ago. Honored and humbled beyond words to be here with my daughter volunteering with the Best Defense Foundation supporting their mission to “take care of the ones who took care of us” assisting World War II veterans as they return to the sand and soil on which they fought.

On September 30, 1982, one of the greatest episodes in television history aired on CBS. If you read closely, you just might recognize a Magnum reference or two in the pages of my novels. There might be more than two in CRY HAVOC, now available in trade paperback. If you are a fan of Magnum PI you are going to love CRY HAVOC.

RED DAWN hit screens on this day in 1984. Who remembers? PARTISAN ROCK “I never saw the brothers again. In time, this war, like every other war, ended. But I never forgot, and I come to this place often, though no one else does. In the early days of World War III, guerrillas, mostly children, placed the names of their lost upon this rock. They fought here alone and gave up their lives ‘so that this nation shall not perish from the earth.’”

And so, on December 11th, 1980, it began… • This debut episode of Magnum, P.I. introduced the world to Thomas Sullivan Magnum. It was the first television show to incorporate the issue of post-traumatic stress among Vietnam veterans in a way that was thoughtful and respectful. • Magnum played an integral part of my childhood. If you read closely, you just might notice subtle and not so subtle references to Magnum in the pages of my novels. Have you found them?

Have you ever listened to President Reagan’s Farewell Address? He delivered it on January 11, 1989. It is around 20 minutes long and well worth the investment. You may find it acutely prophetic considering the events of the past decades. From President Reagan’s Farewell Address: “‘We the People’ tell the government what to do; it doesn’t tell us.” “Our constitution is a document in which ‘We the People’ tell the government what it is allowed to do. ‘We the People’ are free.” “As government expands, liberty contracts.” “Thoughtfulness and knowledge.” “Informed patriotism.” “America is freedom.” “Freedom is special and rare. It’s fragile; it needs protection.” “We’ve got to teach history based not on what’s in fashion but what’s important.” “We will never forget what the boys of Normandy did.” “I’m warning of an eradication of the American memory that could result, ultimately, in an erosion of the American spirit.” “All great change in America begins at the dinner table. So, tomorrow night in the kitchen, I hope the talking begins. And children, if your parents haven’t been teaching you what it means to be an American, let ‘em know, and nail ‘em on it. That would be a very American thing to do.”

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE premiered on October 10, 1963 🍸🇬🇧 Based on Ian Fleming’s 1957 novel of the same name (though the original hardcover does carry a comma: FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE) it marked Sean Connery’s second outing as 007. In 1961, President Kennedy listed it as one of his favorite novels. He first discovered Fleming’s books while recovering from back surgery in 1954 when a friend gave him a copy of CASINO ROYALE. The two would meet in 1960 during JFK’s presidential campaign. Following the election, DR. NO was screened at the White House after which Kennedy suggested that FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE be adapted as the next film even though it was the fifth book in the series. The producers took the President’s advice. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE was one of the last films President Kennedy watched before his assassination in November 1963.
