I’m pleased the issue of child sexual exploitation is getting more attention. I represented victims of abuse regularly in court, and know that the current systems too often fail the vulnerable. The government must urgently implement the recommendations of the Jay Report.

The World Cup starts tonight! ⚽️ But by the end of the first match, we’ll be one man down. Someone dies by suicide in our country every 90 minutes. Three-quarters of these are men. I spoke with Luke the co-founder of #ANDYSMANCLUB about male suicide, mental health and the help that is out there. 👇 Andy's Man Club is an incredible organisation that helps men across Britain open up, talk about what is going on in their lives, and help one another. I have been to sessions in my constituency and was overwhelmed by the support they can offer men dealing with all sorts of problems in their lives - small or large. In each session, a football is passed around the group to share thoughts, challenges, and successes. Simple, but effective and liberating! As a government, we take mental heath - and men's mental health - seriously. We published England’s first Men's Health Strategy last year, which committed further funding for suicide prevention programmes, recognising that suicide is one of the biggest killer of men under 50. We are investing £3.6 million in community based suicide prevention projects - and supporting the Premier League Together Against Suicide initiative with Samaritans. And this is a challenge for all of us, not just government. As a society we can do more to encourage men to open up, get the weight off their shoulders. That is a key part of our Men and Boys work led by David Lammy - amplifying the issues, assuring folk there is help out there. People are angry with us. We got battered in local elections last month. There is a consensus across the Labour Party that we must raise our ambitions and better embrace our radical spirit to meet the challenges we face. But that also involves difficult trade-offs - on issues from defence spending, to Artificial Intelligence, to welfare and public service reform. To win, we must face these too.🌹 The News Agents 👇

We understand people are angry. We are angry too. Our country’s prison system should never be in this position. Why is it? The last Tory government closed 23 prisons. In 2024, we inherited a system on the brink of collapse. What have we done? We’ve begun a prison building programme that is the largest since the Victorian era. By the next election, more criminals will be behind bars than ever before. But we cannot simply build our way out of the crisis. We have to make changes to the sentencing regime too. Our Prime Minister looked again, and has ensured that rapists and certain child sex offenders are not subject to the changes - alongside 18,000 of the most serious offenders. He would have liked to have gone further but he also has a responsibility to ensure we have sufficient prison places for a functioning law and order system. We will always look at what more can be done. Where there are measures that can be taken to safely develop further capacity, we will take them. Meanwhile, we are investing record amounts in community punishments and our probation service - because public safety is always our priority. Sky News

Restorative justice reduces reoffending and can offer victims the answers they seek. That’s why I have appointed Jacob Dunne as an expert adviser on youth justice here at the Ministry of Justice 👇 Jacob’s story of restorative justice is shown across the country in “Punch” - a play by James Graham about Jacob’s childhood, his crime, and the journey he, and his victim’s family took. From the West End to Broadway, Jacob’s experience It is about poverty, rehabilitation, crime, masculinity, and, ultimately, redemption - and the opportunity to turn around lives, and contribute to society. Policy from Whitehall must be informed by lived experience. So pleased Jacob is on board, ready to help us transform the youth justice system.

Sport is a major part of our Men and Boys agenda in government. That’s why it was great to visit Castleford Tigers - to speak about mental health, social isolation and the power of sport. Rugby league is at the heart of so many communities, and clubs do outstanding work helping people through the most difficult times. The Men’s Health Strategy committed more investment for community based projects to help with the mental health. This is vital - suicide remains one of the biggest killers of men aged under 50.
