He’s coming forwards again. The speed with which the boy is back on his feet tells you it’s not the first time he’s seen his father like this and he knows what he has to do. There is no shock reaction to delay the boy as would be the case if it was the first time a boy had to defend himself or his mother. He gets straight back to block his way. This is a terrible thing to observe for people who never see this sort of abuse because “behind closed doors” is suddenly exposed in full. A man like this terrorised his family in public. There is no alternative story. I hope that they the woman and children not redrawn as complicit - as some sort of low class villains who all deserve each other. There is only one villain in this piece. It’s him. That man needs locking up for a long time. Preferably in Turkey. His family need removing to safety before they feel the pressure to accept his apologies. They will undoubtedly worry about how all their lives will change if he is locked up. They might not immediately see this as a positive so they need a LOT of support. These are traumatised children and a desperately abused woman and all have a lot of recovering to do. I hope one day they are all free of him. This really hit me in the gut. Watch with care please.
