Governor Newsom just signed an executive order directing California to build a statewide roadmap to prevent sex trafficking, identify exploitation earlier, and better support survivors. I’ve worked on this issue for years alongside leaders across California, and I’m proud we brought agencies, law enforcement, and survivor-centered organizations together to strengthen prevention and coordination.

Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day — the date when Black women’s earnings finally catch up to what white men made at the end of last year. In California, we’re addressing this gap through strong laws, pay transparency, and our California Equal Pay Pledge. I’m especially proud of our Opportunity Youth Apprenticeship Grants, which support organizations like the Handy Foundation, where young Black women gain paid experience, mentorship, and career training in film and television. This is how we build a future where every woman has a real shot, especially in industries that have long kept women out.

Today we launched and expanded this year’s First Partner’s Summer Book Club, and I’m so grateful one of our featured authors, Nell Cross Beckerman, could join us to read with kids in Altadena Library! In partnership with the California State Library, we’re encouraging families to keep reading all year long—not just during the summer. Because when we read with our children, or create space for them to discover stories on their own, we help grow empathy, spark imagination, and build a lifelong love of learning!
