The music video for Taeyang’s “Vibe (feat. Jimin)” was played on the jumbotron before the BigBang concert! Released in January 2023, “Vibe” marked Taeyang’s first solo release in nearly six years and Jimin’s first official solo collaboration outside BTS. Musician Dianna Bekk, who majored in classical music and conducting at Korea National University of Arts and creates vocal-analysis content based on her musical expertise, analyzed Jimin’s vocals in detail. She explained that Jimin possesses a vocal range of approximately 3.5 octaves, which is extremely rare for a male vocalist. Jimin’s range extends into a register close to that of a female soprano, and exceeds the typical 2.5–3 octave range of professional singers. According to her, this requires a high level of ability to precisely control the vocal cords and resonance organs. She also pointed out that composers often want to entrust their songs to Jimin, while highlighting his exceptional ability to move quickly and smoothly between high and low registers. Bekk further praised Jimin’s remarkable vocal flexibility. Even immediately after performing difficult dance movements, he is able to handle challenging rhythms, which she analyzed as being possible thanks to his rapid control of his vocal apparatus and outstanding vocal flexibility. She was also impressed by Jimin’s exceptional ability to convey emotion, saying that he is capable of captivating listeners from the very first note. Even within BTS’s demanding choreography, Jimin’s vocals smoothly move between high and low registers while expressing sophisticated emotions. His vocals remain rare and precious even after many years in his career. Music critics as well as professional musicians have repeatedly evaluated Jimin’s vocals as “an instrument that firmly sustains BTS’s songs” and “an important auditory element of the BTS sound.” His vocal ability once again demonstrates why his voice is considered such a distinctive and essential part of BTS. #JIMIN #지민

Jimin always said that through this session, he really improved a lot. Not just in singing, but also in learning vocals and writing melodies too. Before making this song, me, Jimin, and the songwriters there had worked on another song called ‘Weak.’ While talking about what kind of story we should tell, I brought up the phrase, ‘You make me weak.’ That was what I had in mind. But actually, it was something directed toward you guys. ‘You make me weak.’ It’s something you’d say to someone you love. ‘You always make me weak.’ But that feeling can be both bad and good, kind of like normal emotions. [….] Then Jimin asked me, ‘Hyung, why is it “You make me weak”?’ Why does it make you weak? And I said, because people… they actually don’t know us. They can’t know us. Even I don’t fully know myself. While talking about that, I think Jimin found that idea really interesting. The idea that: ‘People make me weak because they don’t really know me.’ The next day, Jimin and I ended up splitting into different rooms, and I think there, with DOC and some sampling they brought in, they turned it into ‘they don’t know ’bout us.’ If you watch the performance, there are all those eyes and faces appearing on the iPad or tablet screens. Jimin thrived and excelled throughout a difficult military service. He was named Special Class Warrior (or Special Grade Soldier) and Sergeant (highest rank for mandatory South Korean army). He received top awards since training up until serving in the demanding artillery unit right in the frontline. Fellow soldiers dubbed him as "꼬 (Go for GOAT) Jimin" and "Ace". Jimin shared, "It was very challenging. But being able to be in those shoes and experiencing that meant a lot to us."
