Lifespan recently visited Shunkaen Bonsai Museum in Tokyo, where world-renowned master Kunio Kobayashi preserves trees that have been cared for by generations of bonsai masters Their longevity may come from something trees do exceptionally well: renewal A centuries-old bonsai is not made entirely of centuries-old tissue. Its leaves, roots, bark, and vascular tissues are repeatedly replaced. Plant stem cells, found in regions called meristems, continue producing new growth throughout life Research on ancient trees suggests these stem-cell systems can remain active for centuries, supported by powerful repair and stress-response mechanisms That may be relevant to human longevity. We also depend on stem cells to renew blood, skin, muscle, and other tissues. As we age, that regenerative capacity declines Bonsai do not preserve every old part. They preserve the ability to renew. Perhaps this is due to epigenetic stability that preserves stem cell function
