We’re watching the mist come down and listening to the rain washing through the gutters.

The swallows came to say goodbye this afternoon (I knew they would). And we stood quietly among them and I shed a tear and wished their dear hearts well.

We reseeded this area with a clover mix a year or two ago. Bees all over it today and it smells as sweet as any rose.

Every morning the swallows come in and do three laps round the table - then out. It’s a heartwarming sight.

This is how things are looking at Gwydir this afternoon: we’re doing some paperwork by the fire and watching the rain fall.

Lads, just forget it!

I came across this ruin on the moors. A hushed and beautiful place and somehow poignant to see the stones weep ferns and the crooked beam shouldering the weight of birdsong and cold winds.

An amazing fireplace this: at 14ft it’s the largest in the house. The flue opening at the top is about 60ft up. Most of our early days at Gwydir were spent trying to keep warm in here!

Moments like these: the bright and beautiful point of being alive.

It’s been a wet afternoon here at Gwydir: wistful clouds; old doors swollen in damp frames; wet dogs rolling on threadbare rugs, fire alight in the parlour hearth.

The space in between.

If I opened that window she’d be in and warming herself by the fire…

And here’s Ronald this morning: a happy little chap and growing by the minute.

Four very late arrivals at the chickpea ball and believe me when I say they’ve already used up about twenty-six of their nine lives. They’re into their second week of precarious existence. They’ll be fine now. And I’m very pleased to be released from peachick watch.

Alone in the house today. Such a different atmosphere to when it’s bustling with visitors (which is lovely in a different way). There’s a real depth to the stillness this evening - a completeness - like a mind in a state of deep meditation.

The swallows arrived home this morning! Best news of all and always brings a tear to my eye. They’re busy checking out their nests in the porch.

We’ve been trying to create new nesting sites for our swallows. So we made this box &amp; put a pot swallow nest inside (on the right). But the swallows don’t like the decor &amp; have decided to build their own nest (on the left!) But how fab, at least they’re using the box!

A pink sky this morning and peacocks descending from the cedars for their breakfast.

At Gwydir, we pride ourselves on offering a slick visitor experience with fully interactive displays and live reenactments. Today, we’re focusing on the tug-of-war between church and state in the 16th century.

A serenade from a young swallow this morning. I can’t think of a lovelier wake-up call.

It’s all sorted now but honestly this little peachick (called Ronald) has got some serious life lessons to learn. He’s lost his mum twice already this morning.

A circlage of housemartins, a richness, a gulp, a flight, a swoop. There are literally hundreds of them gathering at Gwydir today, as they bond (from local nesting sites) &amp; move towards becoming a super-flock, preparing for the long journey ahead. What an honour to see this today

Like an embrace…

Just standing here marvelling at the bats emerging from their roost above the porch. Sound up for their snitterings.

It’s raining and the cooler air brings the comfort of a jumper and a rest from outside jobs. The dogs stretch, lean into the silence and doze.

Apologies…I know we’re a bit top heavy on the peachick clips at the moment but this little foursome have just arrived from nowhere and they’re enjoying their first paddle in the sunshine.

May is always a manic month for us. So much to do! Turn your back for a second and the briars are in.

Wise and peaceful counsel this morning from a tree that’s said to be over a 1000 years old.

The rare and precious beauty of these ancient walls and pathways. One foot, one paw, steadily in front of the other. Peace always the gift.

Perhaps not how we would have chosen to start the new year! Red flood alert on the Conwy last night. Keep smiling everyone…2025 is a year to make good things happen!

The fatball sizzle of a midsummer sun. Heuldro’r haf. The garden’s in full sail tonight. Mercury’s throwing diamonds in the air and there’s magic afoot, in the leaves, in the petals, in the underside of things.
