A fishing charter out of Newport Beach enjoyed an extremely rare, and extremely close, encounter with the ocean’s largest shark, one not typically found in Southern California waters. The encounter was captured on video Monday off San Clemente Island, the southernmost of the Channel Islands, about 55 miles from the coast.

A popular L.A. DJ is demanding answers after his 2-year-old Bernese Mountain dog died while staying with a trainer at a Studio City boarding facility. Andrew Fedyk said he paid $10,000 for a four-week “board and train” program and was told Dunkin died while being transported in a car.

Dashcam video shows an NBC 4 Los Angeles news helicopter dropping toward the ground before crashing in Chatsworth Tuesday night while covering a fatal Metro bus crash. Three people were killed, including aerial photojournalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw. A third victim was killed on the ground.

An inmate escaped his jail cell using a pencil to manipulate the door’s locking mechanism at a jail in Chesterfield, South Carolina, according to officials. Charles Alexander Dieterich then made his way through the kitchen and out an unlocked door before climbing a fence topped with barbed wire. He suffered cuts during the escape. Deputies tracked Dieterich down about 30 minutes later and took him back into custody. He was treated at a hospital for his injuries before being returned to jail.
