In terms of owning slaves and wanting abolition, for Thomas Jefferson it actually was a very principled and well thought out set of beliefs. Once you really dig into what he believed it makes complete and total sense why he both held slaves and believed in the abolition of slavery. Essentially, Jefferson inherited this system which began before he was born. He believed that slavery was wrong, that they should be free. However, Jefferson also believed that they were so fundamentally different from Americans down to their very nature as well as due to the history between our two groups that we could never coexist in a way as equals under the same government. Thus, slavery had to be maintained until an actual solution could be found. The solution he arrived at was then to work on gradual abolition combined with subsequent deportation from the United States to their own country. This is also why Liberia exists. Slavery was an inherited problem which could not be dealt with simply by freeing them all, as it would produce endless societal convulsions which would never be possible to correct by giving them citizenship. Once you understand this, it now makes a whole lot of sense why he owned slaves and believed in the abolition of slavery. There were no massive contradictions of "unprincipled exceptions." That is a complete myth created later to impose modern views of egalitarianism onto the founders they never themselves held. That is where the actual contradiction lies. It is a contradiction between modern American beliefs and the beliefs of those the founders held, not on the founders themselves. Here is what Thomas Jefferson believed: "Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free. Nor is it less certain that the two races, equally free, cannot live in the same government. Nature, habit, opinion has drawn indelible lines of distinction between them. It is still in our power to direct the process of emancipation and deportation peaceably and in such slow degree as that the evil will wear off insensibly, and their place be pari passu filled up by free white laborers." - Thomas Jefferson That is a totally consistent set of views, beliefs, and actions he took. Believing that they are inconsistent is actually an anachronistic reading and imposing modern views onto the past. "All men are created equal" simply does not mean what you think it does. That itself was a crafted and controlled narrative made well after the 18th century.

I fell in love with Legend of the Galactic Heroes when I saw just how excellent they portrayed what it was like to be a soldier under a democracy taking on a military operation that seemed to serve no legitimate ends, something I had experienced. Life truly does reflect art.
