I haven’t even really processed this fully, but a week ago my friend Fr. Patrick Mary Briscoe, OP texted me (as I was complaining about the timing of Francis’s death and the conclave) “It’s probably the last thing you want to hear, but I’m your friend and I love you, so I’ll tell you: It’s the timing God wants.” And it was. And is. And I had to be smacked upside the head to see it. On this day, May 8, 2017, I was unjustly fired from my teaching job at a Catholic high school. 8 years later, I was live on CNN when we saw white smoke billowing out of the Sistine Chapel chimney signaling to us that the cardinal electors had chosen a Pope, the first American, no less. I truly have no words. Never doubt God’s timing or works. “God loves us all. Evil will not prevail.” -Pope Leo XIV
