44 years ago today, Pat Summerall and John Madden called a Division-III college football game. Wittenberg vs. Baldwin-Wallace October 3, 1982 During the fall of '82, in the second week of the NFLPA's 57-day players' strike, CBS needed to get creative with its Sunday afternoon programming. So on October 3, the network sent its top NFL broadcast team of Pat Summerall and John Madden to Springfield, Ohio to call Division-III Wittenberg's game against its rival Baldwin-Wallace — each school with an enrollment then of about 2,000 students. Three other NFL on CBS broadcast teams were also assigned to call Division-III games that weekend. Wittenberg, Baldwin-Wallace, and the Ohio Athletic Conference were each paid $10,000 for the game. The video includes the CBS open and pregame introduction by Pat and John, the first several minutes of the game, and select highlights from this historic CBS broadcast. A very rare and fascinating telecast — and quite a thrill for those players, coaches, students, and communities.

40 Years Ago Tonight September 15, 1986 Controversial Call on Monday Night Football The #Broncos pull off a beautiful trick play as John Elway laterals to Gerald Willhite, who hits a streaking Steve Watson for an apparent touchdown. The officials on the field rule (incorrectly) that it was an illegal forward pass, a double forward pass. As officials' use of instant replay was only in its second week of existence (and they were still working out the bugs), a subsequent play is run before the replay booth signals down to the field that the call should've been reversed. However, because the following play had already occurred, the call stood. Denver ultimately prevails over the Steelers at Three Rivers, 21-10.

October 11, 1981 "The Fred Dean Effect" The surprising 49ers slaughter the favored Cowboys at Candlestick, 45-14 — handing Dallas its worst loss in eleven years. Just days prior to the contest, San Francisco had acquired future Hall of Fame defensive end Fred Dean through a trade with the Chargers. Fred had practiced with the Niners only twice prior to playing this game. The 49ers forge a quick 24-0 lead. However, the real story of this game is Dean. San Francisco had a decent 3-2 record entering the day. But after the acquisition of Fred Dean, who had joined forces with a now-healthy Dwaine Board on the D-line — and paired with the 49ers' talented, rookie-laden secondary, the team would go on to win 13 of its next 14 games en route to the franchise's first Super Bowl championship. Dean would ultimately take home the UPI NFC Defensive Player of the Year award in 1981, and his play would be a monumental catalyst in the Niners' rise to a dynasty as the "Team of the Decade" of the 1980s. Video includes: • Rare CBS Sports' network feed broadcast footage of: · Open and pregame with Pat Summerall and John Madden · Pat and John's "hot-mic" comments during the end of the first quarter network commercial break · Fred Dean's dominant three-play sequence late in the first half • NFL Films footage featuring hilarious accounts from Randy Cross and Ronnie Lott about the game and about Dean🚬
