#PauseForThought #SoulShackRadio I have deliberately taken my time before commenting on Thomas Tafirenyika Muchadura Mukanya Mapfumo's Thomas Mapfumo decision to accept the performance offer made by Wicknell Chivhayo. Emotions have been running high, but sometimes it is better to let the dust settle before offering an opinion. Many people have every right to feel disappointed. Mukanya has spent decades speaking truth to power, giving a voice to the ordinary Zimbabwean and refusing offers that he believed compromised his principles. That legacy cannot simply be erased. But I also think we should look at this from another angle. Thomas Mapfumo is not accepting a handout. He is not receiving charity. He is being paid for doing what he has done for more than half a century , performing his music. There is a difference. For decades, Mukanya gave Zimbabwe a soundtrack that defined generations. His music inspired, challenged, comforted and united millions. If someone now believes that contribution is worth paying US$1 million for, why should he apologise for earning it? Some will say he has changed. I would ask... At what point do we allow a man to stop fighting and simply enjoy the fruits of his life's work? He has already made his position known over many decades. History has already recorded where he stood. His record speaks for itself. There is little left for him to prove. Not long ago, after his rural home was destroyed by fire, a fundraising appeal reportedly struggled to raise even a fraction of its modest target. That should give us all pause. It is easy to tell a legend to remain uncompromising. It is much harder to support that legend when he needs us. If this performance fee allows Mukanya to enjoy his later years in comfort, surrounded by family, with the dignity he has earned through his own talent, then I genuinely wish him well. Perhaps this chapter may also open the door to something many Zimbabweans, regardless of political persuasion, have quietly wished to see for years , Thomas Mapfumo spending more time back in the country that gave birth to both the man and the music. There is something deeply special about a legend coming home. Every great story deserves a peaceful final chapter, and there is no place like home. Whether you agree with his decision or not, one thing remains unchanged... Thomas Mapfumo's contribution to Zimbabwean music, our liberation story and our national identity was secured long before this performance offer arrived. A paid performance cannot erase a lifetime of conviction. I wish Dr. Thomas Mapfumo safe travels, successful performances and, above all, peace and happiness in the years ahead. Legends deserve their flowers while they are still here.💐

Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to Zimbabwe. What a journey this sojourn has been. A true roller coaster. From laughter and celebrations to heartbreak and grief, then somehow finding moments to smile again through it all. On 11 April, we gathered at the village in Redhill Njanja to celebrate the lives of our dearly departed grandparents, unveiling tombstones for them and for our late uncles too. It was emotional, but beautiful. A family united in remembrance, love and respect. Barely a week later, we were back again under dark clouds, laying my Aunt Grace to rest after her sudden passing. Life can change in an instant. One moment you are celebrating legacy, the next you are mourning loss. That hit hard. Through it all, I was carried by the love, support and warmth of family and friends. I want to thank my sister Charmaine for the logistical support, Blu Innovations Blu-Innovation Auto parts for the service kit, and Oliver “Twist” Madzinga of Cardeck Auto for keeping the Green Beast purring like a content lion. To family, friends and the #PyjamaParty possé, thank you for the laughter, the company and the warmth. To my daughter Cory, thank you for keeping the home fires burning . Thank you Sisi Ruth, Sekuru Manu and Endurance for making my stay comfortable, keeping me well fed, and for all the running around that had to be done behind the scenes. Sekuru Manu, I truly appreciate you. Mama Rose… thank you for everything you do for us. Love you very much. There are simply too many people to mention individually, but every phone call, every plate of food, every lift, every laugh, every comforting word and every embrace meant something. I leave teary-eyed and heavy-hearted. Leaving home never gets easier. But as they say, a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do. Until next time, Zimbabwe. Cheers for now. Later is gonna be greater.

##NjanjaChronicles #TheHomecoming #TheKingIsAround Saturday 11 April will sit firmly in my history books ,one of the most memorable, emotional and deeply satisfying days, all wrapped up in a small bag of love. After a full year of planning, 35 grandchildren travelled from across the globe and gathered at the village in Redhill, Njanja, to honour and celebrate the lives and legacy of our dearly departed grandparents, Joseph Mackenzie Magende Pfende (15/10/1910 – 30/06/1988) and Helen Brooks (06/11/1918 – 17/08/1991). My grandfather settled in Redhill around 1940, where he established the first store in the area. A man of few words, but decisive in action. His story deserves more than a single post. My grandmother, Helen, was the daughter of Ambuya Chitema of Chihota and a Scottish immigrant who left soon after her birth. She was strong, hardworking, and deeply rooted in tradition. Despite standing out , light-skinned, with flowing hair , she became part of the community in a way that mattered. She worked the land tirelessly, alongside workers and, at times, us grandchildren during school holidays, while Granddad worked as a chauffeur for the MD of African Distillers in the 1970s. We also took time to remember our uncles. Roger Brooks-Pfende (10/03/1949 – 21/04/1981), whose life was tragically cut short after unknowingly drinking traditional beer laced with poison at a community function , an incident that shook the entire Denhere community. Onias George “Mapepa” Mackenzie Pfende (20/08/1947 – 20/06/1998) , a surveyor par excellence, a storyteller, and a man full of compassion. His work helped shape places like New Ardbennie Industrial area and Rufaro Stadium. Newton Brooks (10/01/1951 – 07/07/2024) , “the philosopher.” A wise, gentle man, a great listener, and one of those uncles I could run to for advice back in my dating days 😆 And Martin Brooks-Pfende (16/03/1942 – 22/10/2001) , a fighter and a brawler, loved his fast cars and everything that came with being the OG in the hood of Kong 😆 He worked at Salisbury Municipality, later Harare City Council. Worked hard. Played hard. For many of us, it was a remembrance and a reunion. Some cousins I hadn’t seen in 25 years. Some meeting for the very first time. There was laughter. There were stories. Drinks flowed, music carried through the night, and a strong team of murooras made sure no one went hungry. We sat around the fire until the early hours, reconnecting, remembering, and restoring something that time had quietly stretched. It was waaaay more than a gathering, it was a homecoming. And to say I need a recharge is an understatement. I’m off the grid Monday and Tuesday 😆

Air Zimbabwe’s partnership with a Spanish airline to resume direct London to Harare flights is welcome news for us long suffering UK-based Zimboz who’ve spent years enduring stopovers all over the place, Dubai, Qatar, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia and some even via Holland just to get home. Dinner in London, breakfast in Zimbabwe… bliss. A direct flight would be brilliant, especially for some of us regular right-at-the-back-of-the-plane mbombela class passengers who know transit queues and airport terminals better than we know our own lounges. But since the breaking news, people are asking the same thing… where’s the updated website with booking details, schedules and proper flight information? Come on Air Zimbabwe , pull your finger out will you? I’m still holding my breath slightly though because if we’re honest, we’ve been hearing promises about direct flights returning since 2014 when the airline's CEO Innocent Mavhunga, his predecessor Peter Chikumba and secretary, Grace Pfumbidzayi, were sacked by the then Minister of Transport ,Obert Mpofu amid allegations of fraud and another of criminal abuse of office. #Pause This audio explains why trust in the system is slowly eroding. My story is not unique. EcoCash ,EcoCash was undoubtedly a game changer for money transactions in Zimbabwe. For years, it made sending and receiving money quick and convenient. However, lately I’ve become disillusioned with the platform’s integrity, checks and balances. Audios circulating on WhatsApp confirm that I’m not the only one concerned, especially when it comes to diaspora remittances and how transactions are being handled. Money transfer platforms like WorldRemit generally offer efficient services, but there is room for improvement when things go wrong. In my case, I accidentally entered one wrong digit in the recipient’s phone number. The money landed in a stranger’s wallet and they were able to use this unexpected “bonus” with no hassle at all. Yes, I fully admit my mistake. But my question is this: how is someone able to withdraw money that was not meant for them, especially when the funds are not in their name? There should be a system where recipients are required to enter their identification number before EcoCash releases the money. Typing a wrong digit is very easy, especially with thick fingers like mine! When I contacted WorldRemit, they explained that once the money leaves their system, they have no control over it and advised me to contact EcoCash for a reversal. But we all know how challenging that process can be. Now, regarding the audios circulating: several people are warning others in their WhatsApp groups not to use EcoCash, claiming money is allegedly being intercepted even before it reaches the intended recipient. Some claim close to 1,000 people have already filed police reports. This situation cannot continue. These companies already have systems in place for cash pick-up services where identification is required. Why not apply the same principle to mobile wallet transactions? All it would take is a simple step: require recipients to enter their ID number before funds are released. It shouldn’t be difficult to implement. This would protect both senders and recipients, and help restore trust in the system.
