Pilgrims are slowly returning to the Holy Land. Though their numbers are still small compared to what we were used to, their presence is a sign of hope. The joy on the faces of shop owners and locals says it all — a part of this land’s identity and spirit is coming back. At the Holy Sepulcher, several pilgrims shared that their flights had been on hold since the war. Many of their relatives thought they were “crazy” for coming, but once here, they discovered a different reality — one that the news often fails to show. They spoke of peace, welcome, and gratitude for being able to walk again in the footsteps of faith. One pilgrim, coming for a second time since her first pilgrim in 1995, summed it up simply: “It feels good to be back.”

The Diocese of Jerusalem celebrated the feast of her main patroness, the Virgin Mary, our Lady of Palestine 2025 On Saturday 25th, 2025, H.B. Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, celebrated the Mass at Deir Rafat, concelebrating were many bishops and priests from all over the Holy Land. The celebration witnessed around 3000 faithful participants as well as knights and dames of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher and the Order of Malta. In his homily, Cardinal Pizzaballa focused on the fact that the disciples returned to Jerusalem after the death, resurrection and Ascension of Christ, he invited the faithful to return to their lives with hope in Christ, not allowing the difficulties to paralyze them but to allow their Faith to be their way of living in this troubled land saying: “I feel I must affirm that, however turbulent and difficult these times may be, we are called to return to living with fullness, passion, and vitality. We must reaffirm our commitment to Christ and, like the disciples, draw from Him the strength to return to Jerusalem, to return to life, in order to give that life to the confused men and women of our time”.
