Gwen Stefani wrote "Don't Speak" to tell about the painful end of her 7-year relationship with bassist Tony Kanal. She almost didn't want to release it because it was very personal, but it became No Doubt's biggest hit, spending 16 weeks at #1 in the US.

"Hurt" is not an original by Johnny Cash. The song was written by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) in 1994 for the album The Downward Spiral. Rick Rubin had to insist several times on Cash recording his version, at first Johnny found the idea completely insane because the original version is industrial and noisy. At 71, already very ill, almost blind and with trembling hands, Cash completely transformed the band. The iconic video, directed by Mark Romanek, was filmed at the House of Cash (his own museum). June Carter Cash appears looking at him fondly, the video was shot in February 2003, a few months before she died (May) and Johnny himself (September). Trent Reznor was so moved that he declared, "This song is not mine anymore." It is considered one of the best covers of all time.

"Drive" is from the album Heartbeat City (1984), the album that brought The Cars to commercial peak in the new wave era. Unlike almost everything The Cars did, Ric Ocasek (who usually sings the main tracks) left the lead vocal for bassist Benjamin Orr, who delivered a soft, almost whispered and extremely emotional performance. Released as the third single, it became The Cars' biggest hit in the US: #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 for weeks. Benjamin Orr sang the track alone on the stage of Live Aid (1985) and, tragically, it was one of his last major recordings with the band, he passed away in 2000.

For Madonna to be allowed to use "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" from ABBA in "Hung Up," she had to personally call Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, they only accepted after hearing the full demo. The video, directed by Johan Renck, is a direct tribute to Saturday Night Fever and Flashdance. It became her biggest hit of the 2000s: #1 on the UK Singles Chart (11th at #1 in the UK), #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, #1 in over 40 countries and spent 14 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play.

"Don't You (Forget About Me) " by Simple Minds was written especially by Keith Forsey (the same of hits such as the Flashdance theme) and Steve Schiff for the soundtrack of the classic The Breakfast Club (1985). The Scottish band refused to record the track because it was not their composition and Jim Kerr did not like some parts of the lyrics. Before them, the song was offered to Bryan Ferry (Roxy Music) and Billy Idol, who also did not accept it. In the end, Kerr's wife at the time, Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders), convinced the band to accept, the track is not on any Simple Minds studio album, only on the film's score. It became the biggest hit of their career in the US: #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a week in May 1985 (the band's only #1 there).

"Bad" was originally conceived as a duet between Michael Jackson and Prince. Quincy Jones arranged the meeting and Michael sent the demo, but Prince refused. The reason? The first sentence of the lyrics "Your butt is mine". Prince said: Who's going to sing this to whom? 😂

Alien Ant Farm recorded Smooth Criminal without intending to release the track. The label liked the track so much that it made it the first single from the album Anthology (2001). It was a huge success: it reached #1 on the American alternative rock chart, sold over 1 million copies in the US alone and became the band's biggest hit. Michael Jackson loved the version so much that he personally called to congratulate the guys.

Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the lyrics of Basket Case inspired by the very panic attacks he suffered in his teens and early career, he would wake up in the middle of the night in a panic, walk around the neighborhood to calm down and think he was really going crazy (only years later did he discover it was panic disorder). The track spent 5 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, helped Dookie win Grammy for Best Alternative Album, and became one of Green Day's biggest hits.

"Would?" was written by Jerry Cantrell as a tribute to his friend Andrew Wood, lead singer of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990. The track was first released on the soundtrack of Cameron Crowe's film Singles (1992), where Alice In Chains makes a cameo playing the track live.

"Mr. Jones" is autobiographical. Adam Duritz wrote the song in 1992 inspired by a real night when he and his friend David Jones (a bass player) were drinking, playing the guitar and fantasizing about becoming famous. Adam sang "I wanna be Bob Dylan" and the two imagined what life would be like as rock stars. The track was released as the lead single from their debut album August and Everything After (1993) and placed Counting Crows in the mainstream worldwide almost overnight. Adam even said that the lyrics became a giant irony: he sang about wanting fame before he had it, and suddenly he was living exactly what he dreamed of.

"You Are Not Alone" was the first song in history to debut directly at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Written by R. Kelly especially for Michael Jackson during one of the most difficult moments of his life, it became the last No. 1 single of the King of Pop's career. GOAT

"A Thousand Miles" was written by Vanessa Carlton when she was just 19. She played the full demo (with that iconic piano) for the first time for A&M Records executives, but she was so nervous that she barely played the intro. The video was recorded very realistically: she played the piano on the body of an open truck running through the streets of Los Angeles, the wind messing up her hair was 100% real, with no CGI or green screen. Released in 2002 as the lead single from the album Be Not Nobody, it reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Head Over Heels" was the fourth single (in the UK, third in the US) from the album Songs from the Big Chair (1985). It reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 (one of Tears For Fears' biggest hits in the US), #12 in the UK and became a hit of the 80s. Years later, the track was used in the iconic scene of the school hallway in the film Donnie Darko (2001), which introduced Tears For Fears to a whole new generation of future fans.

Baba O'Riley was written by Pete Townshend and bears his name because of two major influences at the time: spiritual guru Meher Baba and minimalist composer Terry Riley. The famous synthesizer intro (which many people think is a violin) was made by Pete using a Lowrey organ programmed to sound like a violin, inspired by Terry Riley's techniques.

"Into the Groove" was released in 1985 (track from the film Desperately Seeking Susan and single that became Madonna's first UK #1). On July 13, 1985, she took the stage at Live Aid in Philadelphia (JFK Stadium) and delivered one of the most iconic performances in the festival's history.
