Gwen Stefani wrote the lyrics to "Don't Speak" about the painful end of her seven-year relationship with bassist Tony Kanal. She initially struggled with releasing such a deeply personal song, but it became No Doubt's biggest hit, spending 16 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart. Because it was never released as a commercial single in the US, it was ineligible to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 under Billboard's rules at the time.

"Eye of the Tiger" was written specifically for the 1982 film Rocky III after Queen declined to let the producers use "Another One Bites the Dust." The motivational rock anthem spent six weeks at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart, and became Survivor's biggest hit. The song was composed in just a few days after Sylvester Stallone showed the band an early cut of the film. Stallone was so impressed by the demo that he used it in Rocky III before the final studio version had even been recorded.

Written by Diane Warren and Albert Hammond for the 1987 film Mannequin, Hammond drew inspiration from his own life after his divorce, as he was beginning a new relationship. Released as a single, the song spent two weeks at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart, and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

"Go Your Own Way" is from Fleetwood Mac's landmark 1977 album Rumours. Written by guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, the song peaked at #10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the band's signature rock anthems. The lyrics were written during one of the most turbulent periods in rock history. Buckingham drew directly from the painful breakup of his relationship with Stevie Nicks while the rest of the band was also facing personal turmoil: Christine and John McVie were divorcing, and Mick Fleetwood was dealing with the collapse of his marriage. Nicks was particularly hurt by the line "packing up, shacking up is all you want to do" feeling it portrayed her unfairly. She even asked Buckingham to remove it but he refused, insisting the song reflected his own perspective on their breakup.

"Bad" was originally conceived as a duet between Michael Jackson and Prince. Quincy Jones arranged the meeting and Michael sent the demo, but Prince refused. The reason? The first sentence of the lyrics "Your butt is mine". Prince said: Who's going to sing this to whom? 😂

"Born to Be Wild" is from Steppenwolf's 1968 self-titled debut album and became forever linked to the 1969 film Easy Rider. The track peaked at #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 where it was kept from the top spot by The Rascals' "People Got to Be Free, and is frequently cited as one of the earliest heavy metal songs. The lyrics feature the first well-known use of the phrase "heavy metal thunder" in a rock song although it originally referred to the roar of a motorcycle, not the music genre. The track’s association with Easy Rider turned it into the ultimate motorcycle freedom anthem.

"To Sir with Love" was written especially for the 1967 film of the same name starring Sidney Poitier. Lulu, who was just 19 years old, not only sang the song but also made her film debut as one of the rebellious students. Unimpressed with the original theme songs proposed for the film, she pushed composer Mark London to come up with something better, and he quickly wrote the melody that became the final version. The result was the best-selling single of 1967 in the United States, spending five weeks at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Despite its huge success in America, it was never released as a single in the UK.

Otis Redding died in a plane crash just three days after recording "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". Since he had not yet finished the lyrics, he ended up whistling the ending, and this whistling was in the official version. Steve Cropper completed the songwriting after his death. Released as a single in January 1968, it was Otis' first and only single to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent four weeks at the top. The song won two posthumous Grammys and became one of the greatest classics in soul music.

"Sledgehammer" is Peter Gabriel's biggest solo hit and his only #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The groundbreaking music video, directed by Stephen R. Johnsonwith animation by Aardman (later famous for Wallace & Gromit). To create the iconic effects, Peter Gabriel spent around 16 hours lying beneath a sheet of glass while animators moved objects frame by frame, with the shoot taking nearly a week to complete. Kiss from a Rose was written by Seal in 1987, but was only a worldwide hit almost a decade later. Released in 1994 on the album Seal II, the song went almost unnoticed on release. Everything changed when director Joel Schumacher heard the track and decided to include it in the end credits of Batman Forever (1995). He even tried to use it in a romantic scene between Val Kilmer and Nicole Kidman, but it didn't fit in, yet he insisted on putting it in the film. Schumacher also directed an official music video using footage from the production. The result was overwhelming: the song reached #1 in the US, became one of the biggest hits of the 90s and won three Grammys in 1996 (Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance). The track had appeared before in the film The NeverEnding Story III (1994), but without being so successful.
