As a Baltimorean, it was an honor to throw the ceremonial first pitch at the Baltimore Orioles Washington Nationals game in celebration of Nat’l Book Festival Day. It was a pinch me moment to receive tips from Hall of Famers Jim Palmer and Cal Ripken Jr and the support of Os owner David Rubenstein.

I am deeply saddened learning about the passing of author and artist Nikki Giovanni. Nikki was a personal hero and mentor. During her last event at the Library of Congress, she discussed her recent picture book, A Library. Nikki sang and dedicated it to librarians everywhere.
