The last time Arsenal played Napoli in the Champions League, Mikel Arteta was sent off a minute after Napoli took the lead. Arsenal needed a draw to win the group but would be eliminated if they lost by 3 goals. Arsenal lost 2-0 & finished on the exact same points as both Napoli & Dortmund. Arsenal finished above Napoli on goal difference but finished below Dortmund as Dortmund had a better head to head record.

15 years ago today, Arsenal’s new big £11m signing Gervinho was sent off on his Premier League debut for lightly slapping Newcastle’s Joey Barton, which made Barton collapse. After the game, Alex Song was also given a 3 match ban for stamping on Joey Barton 15 minitws before the Gervinho incident.

7 years ago today, Arsenal lost 3-1 away at Liverpool. David Luiz gave away a penalty for pulling Mohamed Salah’s shirt but after the game Salah said he didn’t even know why it was a penalty. When the line ups came out, people weren’t sure what shape Arssnal would play in but were shocked during the game when they saw new signing Nicolas Pépé started on the left while Dani Ceballos played on the Right Wing, despite Ceballos putting in a Man of the Match performance in midfield just a week before.

19 years ago today, Emmanuel Adebayor had to be escorted off the pitch, as a really young Arsenal team lost 2-1 to Chelsea in the League Cup Final in arguably the most heated game between the two clubs. Arsenal were the better team for most of the game with Theo Walcott scoring his first ever Arsenal goal to give them the lead. Despite this, Chelsea’s experience came out on top. John Terry was knocked unconscious. John Obi Mikel was sent off for Chelsea, while Kolo Touré & Emmanuel Adebayor were both sent off for Arsenal. However, Didier Drogba & Arsenal physio Gary Lewin had to escort Adebayor off the pitch.

27 years ago today, Arsène Wenger iconically offered a replay to Sheffield United after Arsenal controversially knocked them out of the FA Cup. Sheffield United had kicked the ball out so that one of their players could receive treatment. However, when Arsenal took the throw in to give the ball back to Sheffield United, Nwankwo Kanu misunderstood the situation and intercepted the ball before setting up Arsenal‘s winning goal.

25 years ago today, Arsenal called the British media for an emergency press conference at London colney. A lot of outlets did not send their top journalists as they believed Arsenal were just announcing the signing of reserve goalkeeper Richard Wright from Ipswich. However, the whole room fell silent when former Tottenham captain & academy product Sol Campbell walked out. The negotiations all took place after midnight at David Dein’s house with Dein, Arsène Wenger & Campbell. Not only is this considered the most shocking transfer in English football, but it is also considered as the most perfectly executed, as only less than a handful of people knew.

3 years ago today, Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was controversially booked for time wasting during a throw in, despite only having the ball for 5 seconds. It was explained to be from “ cumulative time wasting” as Aaron Ramsdale, Thomas Partey & Kai Havertz held onto the ball for too long before giving the ball to Tomiyasu. To make things worse, he was later sent off after Jordan Ayew dived to get him a second yellow.

However, this game is remembered for a horror challenge from Paddy McNair on Jack Wilshere, which ruled Wilshere out for 6 months. Before this game, Wilshere was already recovering from an injury that should have ended his career 3 years earlier. No foul was given & McNeir wasn’t booked. Meanwhile, Wilshere only played in 8 of the next 59 PL games.

4 years ago today, Arsenal, who finished 5th in the Premier League, were 2-0 down at half time against FC Nürnberg in their first pre season friendly if the summer, leading to a meltdown on social media. New signing Gabriel Jesus would come on for the second half and turn the game on its head with Arsenal winning 5-3. Jesus scored twice and had another 2 goals go down as own goals. Arsenal won every pre season game & won 9 of their opening 10 Premier League games. Many believe this was the game when Arsenal transitioned from a Top 6 team into serious title contenders.

9 years ago today, Arsenal lost their first game in 4 months, as they lost 2-1 away at Everton; missing out on the chance to go top of the Premier League. Unfortunately, this one defeat spiralled into a 5 year decline, as Arsenal never recovered & narrowly finished outside of the top 4 for the first time in 21 years. Arsenal didn’t qualify for the Champions League for another 6 years during which, had 4 different managers & finished as low as 8th.

11 years ago today, 19-year-old Héctor Bellerín broke into the Arsenal 11 after a freak injury to defender Mathieu Debuchy, as Arsenal beat Stoke City 3-0. Debuchy dislocated his right shoulder in a challenge from Marko Arnautovic and collided with the advertising boards behind the goal. The Arssnal players were forced to play on for the next few minutes in a silent Emirates Stadium while their teammate received serious medical attention behind the gold. Bellerín went on to play in 16 of the remaining 18 PL games & was named in the PFA Team of the Year the following season. Debuchy had only joined in the summer but this injury ultimately cost him his spot in the Arsenal team and other injuries would cost him his spot in the France national team.
