From endangered to invasive. In the 1950s, sea lion numbers had dropped to just 7,000 in the Pacific. The Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 was designed to fix that, and it worked: today there are over 300,000 in the ocean. But an estimated 6,000 have now moved into the rivers, preying heavily on the salmon that have been a cultural cornerstone to this area for generations. Ever wonder why Red Delicious showed up in the cafeteria more than any other apple? It's because USDA's bulk-purchase list for schools left out newer varieties like Cosmic Crisp. My amendment gets USDA buying the newer, better-tasting ones too. Farmers like ApplegirlKait (Kaitlyn Thornton) grow both, from Red Delicious for export to Cosmic Crisp for flavor. Dean and I live out here in Skamania County. We run an auto repair shop. We know what it costs to fill a tank, make payroll, and pay for childcare. I don't take corporate PAC money, so I can fight drug and insurance company price gouging instead of answering to them. That's how we bring costs down for WA-03.

Washington DC is a bigger clunker than even I realized. Everyone there is running around with the check engine light on, but doing nothing about it. I'm doing something about it. I stopped Congress from giving itself a pay raise. I'm fighting to ban members of Congress from trading stocks. And I've never taken a dime of corporate PAC money. Congress barely functions these days, but I’ve still been able to move meaningful legislation that will make life better for SW Washington by finding areas where both sides can work together. Whether it’s cutting red tape for childcare providers, making it easier for veterans to use their home loan benefits, or protecting our salmon from invasive sea lions, I’m reflecting the experience of my constituents in Congress. Turns out if you listen to people and stop playing partisan games, you can actually deliver.

Every housing unit we build lowers the cost of finding a place to live and returns agency to the middle class. In Congress, I’m a cosponsor of the Yes In My Backyard Act (YIMBY) bill, which will prioritize federal dollars for communities that reduce the red tape limiting housing construction. I’m also a champion of getting shop class back in junior high. We’ll fix our housing shortage by reducing red tape, building more housing units, and ensuring young people learn the skills they need to build homes right here in Southwest Washington.

With increased election security presence and diligent work by county election officials, depositing your ballot at a drop box location remains a safe and secure way to vote. 🇺🇸🗳️ I’m confident law enforcement will apprehend whoever set fire to the Fisher’s Landing ballot drop box on Monday morning. In the meantime, the people of Southwest Washington will not be deterred from exercising our right to vote. Any voter who returned their ballot to the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center ballot drop box in Vancouver — at any point this weekend — should contact the Elections Division of the Clark County Auditor’s office immediately to request a replacement ballot, due to the arson at the ballot drop box. Pride in place and commitment to community are antidotes to much of what ails us as a country. I’ve felt a loss as we’ve been turned into consumers of goods, culture, and politics instead of creators of it. We import cheap junk – whether it's headlight assemblies from China or politics from D.C. – and it breaks quickly, doesn’t do what’s promised, and leaves working people worse off. I think that’s a problem, and I’m running for Congress to fix it. I’m running because I’m proud to co-own and operate an auto repair shop with my husband, and I want my son to have that pride, too. I’m running because we should have the right to repair our own stuff. I’m running because we need to cut burdensome regulations and invest in the trades so we can build more housing and strengthen the middle class. And I’m running to protect our rights from politicians who want to take them away from us. We’re independent-minded in Southwest Washington, and I’ve been an independent voice in Congress. I’m ranked in the top three percent of most bipartisan U.S. Representatives, and I’ve introduced 49 bipartisan bills with Republican partners. Every vote I take reflects the priorities I hear about from farmers, fishermen, loggers, small business owners, and working people across our district. Serving in Congress is not about scoring partisan political points. For me it’s about investing in the trades, supporting public safety, and rebuilding the middle class.
