From endangered to invasive. In the 1950s, sea lion numbers had dropped to just 7,000 in the Pacific. The Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 was designed to fix that, and it worked: today there are over 300,000 in the ocean. But an estimated 6,000 have now moved into the rivers, preying heavily on the salmon that have been a cultural cornerstone to this area for generations. Every housing unit we build lowers the cost of finding a place to live and returns agency to the middle class. Pride in place and commitment to community are antidotes to much of what ails us as a country.
