The thing about hosting the World Cup is you can just be on some tollway cruising along in your rental car and realize that you are 10 feet from the greatest footballer in history, and maybe the most famous person on earth. 🇦🇷

I got there and it turned out she couldn’t take him in - she wasn’t authorized to treat “rabies vectored” species. She gave me the phone number of someone who would. 80 miles away. In Culpepper, VA. At this point it was 7PM & the storm had set in. Our friend was still calm, tho!

Over the next month or so, Karen kept our little guy in an enclosure in her barn, with several other raccoons. Miraculously, he made a near full recovery. I had assumed his back was broken - I was wrong. I returned a couple of times to see him. I am so grateful to Karen, truly.

Meanwhile in the MASL, a whole-ass brawl erupted between players and fans after game one of the cup final. San Diego Sockers journeyman Stefan Mijatovic has been banned for life from the MASL. Didn’t know that was even possible.

Lots of comparisons to be made between MLS & Liga MX - here’s one that doesn’t: the atmosphere in Monterrey last night is not one that exists anywhere in the US. Entire stadium was one giant supporters’ section, every fan engaged, every fan passionate. Whole different scene.

Pelé's bicycle kick against the Miami Toros in 1976. In the outfield at Yankee Stadium, he scored one of the most beautiful goals in the history of American soccer. RIP, O Rei.

Meanwhile in the MASL, which remains the most wildly entertaining thing in American soccer, dudes are just going full malice in the palace. At the center of it all is Stefan Mijatovic. I remember Stef from the 1st-ever TST, where he was banned for punching Noah Beck in the face.

Probably the best game I’ve ever seen in person. Just an absolutely insane match and the loudest, most raucous atmosphere I’ve ever been in, personally. Camera battery died just before the 98th min equalizer so I picked up my cell. The scene w/Felipe Cárdenas from Monterrey:

Lovely moment here in San Francisco as US Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone pays tribute to long-time SoccerAmerica reporter Paul Kennedy. Among the very best to ever do it & a fantastic human being as well. 🙌
