It's now CONFIRMED! ☄️Interstellar object 3I/ATLAS is indeed a #comet. ✨Recent images captured by the Gemini North telescope, an extremely powerful telescope on Maunakea, #Hawaii, show the object has now developed a compact coma & trail - thus confirming previous data that it IS a comet. 💫As it hurdles through our solar system & closes in on our Sun, Comet 3I/ATLAS is not only #ancient at nearly 8 billion years old, but at a high speed of 52,000 mph, it will close in to perihelion (closest point to the Sun) around this October 23rd when it will be ~121.million miles from the Sun & speed up to a maximum speed of 42 mi/sec. ☄️It will be in evening skies thru Sept 2025, then swing around the Sun & out of view for us til Nov/Dec, when it re-emerges & is visible next to Venus in our morning skies. ✨By that point it should have a nice long tail & will be easily visible by amateur telescopes & even binoculars! ☄️EXCITING Update on #3IATLAS The #comet continues to surprise... ✨It appears to be 7-8 BILLION yrs old! That makes it the oldest comet we have ever observed -&- nearly TWICE the age of our Solar System! Researchers at Oxford have found that 3I/ATLAS came from a distant region of our galaxy called the "Thick Disk" which is filled with #ANCIENT ✨STARS.
