🇬🇧🇷🇺 Britain is talking about war with Russia while lacking the military strength to fight one. Brandon Weichert spoke with Ian Proud, a former British diplomat who served in Moscow and helped authorize UK sanctions against Russia. And Proud had a rather uncomfortable assessment of Britain's position. The British Army has roughly 73,000 troops. Russia has around 1.5 million military personnel and one of the world's largest nuclear arsenals. Yet senior British military figures are increasingly discussing the possibility of confrontation with Moscow. Proud believes Britain has spent years talking about Russia while largely abandoning the harder work of talking to Russia. He also described being detained for three hours at Heathrow after attending the Valdai Discussion Club in Moscow, despite notifying the British government of his trip beforehand. But his bigger concern is Ukraine. Proud argues that Russia has the manpower, energy resources and industrial capacity to sustain the conflict far longer than Ukraine and its European supporters. He believes Moscow could accept a settlement centered on the Donbas, but warns that continued refusal to negotiate could eventually encourage Russia to push farther toward Kyiv or Odesa. And there's a political problem Western leaders may find even harder to confront. Proud argues that any eventual peace agreement could leave Ukraine with worse terms than those discussed in 2022, after years of casualties and enormous financial costs. 🇺🇸🇮🇷 Iran has found a way to keep the Strait of Hormuz dangerous, even with the U.S. Navy protecting shipping. I spoke with former U.S. intelligence officer Malcolm Nance about the renewed attacks on commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. And his explanation was fascinating. According to Nance, the US military had developed a relatively effective shipping corridor along the southern side of the strait, using helicopters, patrol aircraft and naval air defenses to protect vessels moving toward the UAE. For a while, it appeared to be working. But Nance believes Iran was watching the traffic increase and waiting for Washington to become less willing to retaliate. Now, drones and anti-ship missiles are reportedly hitting vessels again, threatening the shipping route that Gulf exporters depend on. And that creates a serious problem for Trump. The U.S. can spend enormous resources escorting tankers, intercepting missiles and maintaining patrols. Iran only needs enough successful attacks to make commercial shipping dangerous and expensive. We also discussed the expanding war in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia and the Houthis are drawing more regional players into the conflict. Egyptian military assistance is being discussed, while UAE-backed Yemeni forces are reportedly coordinating more closely with Saudi-backed factions. The U.S. Navy may be able to get ships through Hormuz. But keeping the route commercially viable while Iran continues attacking it is an entirely different challenge. But Professor Mohammad Marandi sees a serious flaw in that calculation. We discussed a report from Iranian state television claiming Washington had privately requested permission to carry out a symbolic attack on Iran's Pickaxe Mountain nuclear facility without facing retaliation. The report remains unverified, but Marandi believes it is credible. And he was emphatic about one thing. Iran would NOT give Trump the ending he wants. Marandi argues that allowing Washington to attack Iran, declare victory and withdraw would encourage future American military interventions. In his view, making another attack politically costly for Trump is essential to establishing deterrence. I challenged him on that. If Iran can emerge from this conflict controlling the Strait of Hormuz, with American forces withdrawing and Tehran negotiating from a stronger position, why risk another devastating confrontation? Marandi's answer revealed a much bigger obstacle to peace. He believes Iran should refuse to restore normal shipping through Hormuz until Washington fulfills the broader ceasefire commitments Tehran says were agreed upon. That includes ending the fighting in Lebanon, Gaza and Yemen, alongside resolving Iran's own demands. And this is where our disagreement becomes particularly important. I believe Iran could secure an extraordinary strategic victory by accepting a narrower agreement and addressing the remaining regional conflicts separately. Marandi believes doing so would reward Washington for abandoning its commitments. Trump may be looking for a way to end America's war with Iran. 🇺🇸🇮🇷 Oil is already costing around $140 a barrel in the physical market, and the worst of the price shock may still be ahead. Brandon Weichert spoke with Johns Hopkins economist Steve Hanke about the growing economic damage from the war with Iran. And Hanke explained why the $110 Brent crude price doesn't tell the whole story. He estimates that physical oil is trading closer to $140, with roughly $30 of the difference coming from tanker shortages, longer shipping routes and the difficulty of getting oil to refineries. That's on top of the price increase caused by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. But his bigger warning concerns what happens next. Countries have been cushioning the shock by drawing down fuel inventories. Eventually, those stocks need replenishing, potentially at much higher prices. Hanke expects diesel prices to remain elevated through at least mid-2027, even without further escalation. And the consequences extend far beyond fuel. Gulf shipping disruptions also threaten supplies of sulfur used in fertilizer production and metal processing, adding pressure to agriculture and manufacturing. Meanwhile, Hanke believes the economic fallout could severely damage Republicans in the upcoming midterms as voters connect rising living costs to the war. The real danger goes beyond $140 oil. We're talking about an energy shock that keeps spreading through the economy long after the initial disruption. And Hanke sees little reason to expect relief anytime soon. Steve Hanke

There are also concerns about U.S. refueling aircraft concentrated at regional airfields within range of Iranian weapons. That creates a dangerous calculation. Brandon Weichert spoke with retired U.S. Army Major General Randy Manner about a troubling weakness in America's military preparedness. And his assessment was unusually direct. Manner believes the U.S. military has failed to adapt quickly enough to modern drone warfare, despite years of watching its development in Ukraine. He pointed to American training centers, where troops encounter drones but rarely face the intensity of coordinated swarms seen on today's battlefields. That matters because American bases in the Middle East are fixed targets, while any ground operation against Iran would expose entire formations and their supply networks. We also discussed the death of Master Sergeant Nicole Amor and five fellow soldiers in an Iranian drone attack in March. Her husband has publicly questioned whether failures in military leadership contributed to their deaths. Manner believes inadequate counter-drone defenses may have played a role, although he acknowledged he had not personally inspected the facility's defenses. And he warned that sending American ground forces into Iran could trigger a much wider escalation. The U.S. military has spent decades preparing to fight with overwhelming technological superiority. His family has paid an extraordinary price for the struggle over power in Riyadh. Khaled says two of his siblings have been detained since 2017, and his father was the target of an assassination plot in Canada. But what interested me most was his assessment of Mohammed bin Salman's position today. Khaled doesn't believe MBS is about to be overthrown. Quite the opposite. He argues that the crown prince has consolidated power so thoroughly that even widespread dissatisfaction within the royal family is unlikely to become an organized challenge. The real danger, he believes, comes from Yemen. In 2015, MBS thought he could defeat the Houthis quickly. Instead, Saudi Arabia spent years fighting a war that left the Houthis more capable of threatening the kingdom. Now Saudi airports and energy infrastructure are under attack, and Khaled sees little prospect of a successful Saudi ground invasion. His proposed solution is surprisingly straightforward: stop trying to determine Yemen's political future and concentrate on protecting Saudi territory. The problem is that doing so would require MBS to acknowledge that his original strategy failed. We also discussed the growing rivalry between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and how MBS's concentration of power helped turn the 2017 dispute with Qatar into a four-year blockade. What stayed with me was the distinction Khaled made between having power and having good options. MBS may have eliminated nearly every serious political rival at home. Brandon Weichert spoke with geopolitical analyst Dimitri Lascaris about the deteriorating situation in Yemen, where the Houthis are expanding their operations and Saudi Arabia is struggling to contain the damage. Now Egypt could be drawn into the conflict. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has reportedly considered sending troops to defend Saudi Arabia, subject to parliamentary approval. Lascaris believes Egypt would be taking an enormous risk. Its economy is under severe pressure, public anger is widespread, and an intervention could trap Egyptian forces in a costly war with no obvious exit. And more troops wouldn't necessarily solve Saudi Arabia's problem. The Houthis can strike energy infrastructure deep inside the kingdom. Even a successful ground offensive might not eliminate that threat. Lascaris warns that a major offensive could also draw Iran and other regional armed groups into the fighting, turning Yemen into a much wider war. He raised an even more alarming possibility: Saudi Arabia's monarchy could face a genuine survival crisis within the next 6 to 12 months. We also discussed the Strait of Hormuz, where attacks on commercial shipping threaten oil transportation. Lascaris argues that protecting tankers means little if Iran can still threaten the ports, pipelines and loading facilities supplying them. Saudi Arabia may increasingly depend on foreign armies for its security, while those countries have plenty to lose themselves. Anthony Aguilar told Brandon Weichert that recent explosions at Popular Mobilization Forces sites in Baghdad and reported UAV strikes near Erbil are signs Iraq is being pulled in. With U.S. conventional forces largely gone, a security vacuum now pits Iranian-backed PMF elements, Kurdish factions, Turkish interests, and residual U.S./CIA presence against each other. Aguilar sees real risk of a new Sunni-Shia-Kurdish civil war in the coming weeks or months. On the Strait of Hormuz, he argues Iran’s physical grip is solid. More U.S. airstrikes won’t loosen it. He sees Washington running out of conventional levers and possibly setting the stage for a limited “Midnight Hammer light” strike followed by claims of success that don’t hold. That, in his view, could become pretense for considering a tactical nuclear option… even though he doubts even a B61 would meaningfully defeat the deepest sites or end the war. On the naval side, the blockade moving farther south (toward Pakistani waters) could be an attempt to avoid an Iran-Yemen engagement box. It could also be positioning Marine Expeditionary and amphibious assets for a limited landing into Baluchistan, the same southern approach once contemplated when the U.S. held Afghanistan. Aguilar says every major off-ramp has been closed or ignored. Both sides are interpreting each other through media and social posts rather than direct talks. She sees him as dismissive of the whole European project, especially after the U.S. locked in higher gas prices for the continent. She said Putin knows exactly how to speak to Trump… with respect and the language of power. Zelensky, by contrast, has become a constant demand machine whose usefulness has expired. The war itself is what keeps Zelensky in place. End it, elections follow, and he is gone. Trump has multiple off-ramps already on paper, including the memorandum he signed, yet he keeps failing to use them. Either he cannot grasp the options or the people around him prefer the current path. That path, in her view, is less about victory than about reshaping an empire that is writing off Europe and the Middle East while trying to stay focused on Asia. Mark Cancian of CSIS outlined the limits of U.S. bunker-busters against sites like Pickaxe, explaining that the U.S. has many 2,000- and 5,000-pound bunker busters suited to tunnels. Stocks of the largest weapons stay very small, with fewer than ten GBU-57 penetrators and MOABs. Smaller bombs cannot reach facilities under hundreds of feet of granite. The MOAB, an airburst weapon, offers limited value beyond clearing the entrance so a follow-on blast might enter. Pickaxe is not a finished operational site. Cancian puts roughly two-thirds of the odds on military operations after the midterms. A MOAB on a remote site like Pickaxe ranks among the more likely steps. Broader strikes or limited island operations remain possible. A mainland landing is effectively off the table given force ratios and casualty sensitivity. Iran has rebuilt parts of its missile and drone stock with Russian and Chinese help. Jet-powered Shahid variants move faster and are harder to intercept. Retaliation would likely target Gulf oil sites, airfields, and supporting bases. U.S. industry was built for short wars. Production has risen since Ukraine, yet it still lags behind what is needed for a long fight, especially against cheap mass drone attacks. Systems exist but lack the volume for repeated swarms. 🇺🇸 Global liquidity is drying up, and Wall Street may be heading into a very different kind of crisis. Brandon Weichert spoke with Michael Howell, founder of CrossBorder Capital, about mounting pressure on global financial markets. Howell doesn't expect another 2008-style collapse. His concern is the enormous debt accumulated during years of cheap borrowing, much of which now needs refinancing at higher rates. His estimate is striking: roughly 80% of primary financial market transactions now involve rolling over existing debt rather than funding new investment. And liquidity is beginning to decline. The U.S. economy continues growing, supported by government spending and massive AI infrastructure investments. But Howell argues that this activity is draining liquidity from financial markets. He compared the AI boom to the fiber-optic revolution. The technology changed the world, but some of the companies financing it went bankrupt. A technology can change everything and still be a terrible investment at the wrong price. Howell is watching the flattening Treasury yield curve and widening credit spreads for signs of trouble. He even sees government bonds becoming an attractive refuge. But the real danger is the approaching debt maturity wall. Companies and governments face enormous refinancing obligations just as liquidity becomes scarcer. If the pressure grows too severe, Howell expects central banks to intervene again.
