Enlargement is on the move. Four accession conferences in sight with Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine and Moldova. Our frontrunners are delivering, and so are we. Progress must go hand in hand with strategic alignment and respect for the rule of law. Our security depends on both. My doorstep ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council:

Today is a Super Tuesday for EU enlargement. For the first time in over 2 decades, we are holding four accession conferences on the same day. Our four front runners Ukraine, Moldova, Albania and Montenegro are all taking major steps forward. With Ukraine and Moldova, we are opening Cluster 6, covering areas like defence and security where the case for their EU membership is especially strong. Albania will close its first chapters. And Montenegro is firmly in the endgame of formal negotiations having closed 18 of 33 chapters. Today’s momentum must now be turned into delivery on the ground. My full doorstep:

Together with Member States, we have made more progress on enlargement in the last two years than in the past two decades. It is now time to prepare for a larger Union. This requires realism and pragmatism. That is exactly what the Communication we published today brings. A concrete assessment of the impact of enlargement on our Union. And operational actions to guide our next steps.

The news from Ukraine is horrific. What Russia is doing is state terror. People are freezing. With Foreign Ministers we are discussing emergency support. We just sent almost 500 generators, we are preparing 500 more to keep the lights on in hospital, shelters, and critical services. More help will follow. We are also discussing the prosperity paper for post-war Ukraine. EU accession reforms are at its heart because they are a proven way to growth and investment. Today is Mega-Monday for EU enlargement. First, Ukraine and Moldova will take their biggest step since the decision to start EU accession negotiations in 2023. We will also close two more chapters with Montenegro, bringing it close to half of all chapters closed. It’s a day to celebrate. I’ll also use today to urge candidates to continue the pace of reforms. My doorstep ahead of the FAC ⤵️

We are moving closer to an enlarged European Union. President von der Leyen announced in her State of the Union address that we will soon propose roadmaps for the most advanced candidates. They will set out a clear priority list: timelines and deliverables to help the most advanced candidates complete the necessary reforms. This clarity will help us prepare to seize the momentum of enlargement and strengthen our Union.

EU accession talks with Albania progress faster than ever. In European Parliament, I reiterated that progress in negotiations is a clear sign of 🇦🇱's commitment & continued 🇪🇺 support. A whole of society involvement will be crucial to achieve 🇦🇱's goal to close negotiations by 2027.

The autumn of enlargement is coming. 2026 is already a record year of progress. And we plan to deliver even more. Discussions are now intensifying how best to prepare our Union to welcome new members. An enlarged Europe must be stronger to defend our democratic values at home, and secure our interests globally. We’re talking about the Western Balkans here at the Foreign Ministers meeting in Brussels. When countries in the region deliver, we do too: the start of drafting Montenegro's accession treaty, new payments under the Growth Plans, and Serbia joining SEPA. Hungarian elections bring positive news for EU enlargement. We will move forward with the €90 billion loan and hope that the Council will soon open all negotiations clusters with Ukraine and Moldova. Both countries are delivering on reforms. We’ll also discuss our relations with the South Caucasus. As instability in the world grows, the region has become Europe’s only land bridge to Asia. We want to strengthen this corridor even further so Europe is better prepared before the next crisis hits. My full #FAC doorstep ⤵️

After a successful 2025 for Moldova's EU aspirations, we are moving to the next phase of technical negotiations. Today, we received guidance from all 27 Member States to instruct our work on Moldova's reform trajectory. Another step to bring Moldovans closer to the EU. 👇
