Mayor Michelle Wu's administration put a two-way bike lane in front of a South Boston senior housing building in August. Two months later, the city is tearing it out. The roughly 100-foot lane on O'Connor Way, which the Andrew Square Civic Association dubbed a "bike lane to nowhere," didn't connect to any bike network. It took the parking that caregivers, visiting nurses and families relied on. Neighbors warned it would make it hard for first responders to reach the building, and video obtained by Mass Daily News shows it: a Boston EMS ambulance and a fire truck stuck out on the street, with the bike lane's railings between them and the front door. Flynn says it wasn't the first time. In August, an ambulance couldn't pull up out front, and days later neighbors couldn't drive onto the street for more than 45 minutes. The city even held a meeting with residents without any South Boston elected officials there, Flynn says. Flynn kept pushing, and Boston's Chief of Streets has now told him the lane "is now being removed." He wants a City Council hearing on how it got approved in the first place, and on what he calls "the waste of taxpayer money."

BOSTON — California Gov. Gavin Newsom turned up in a video on Gov. Maura Healey's Instagram with a pitch for Massachusetts voters: open your wallets. "All right, it's Gavin Newsom here in Massachusetts with the great Maura Healey," he says. In the video, he says Healey's fellow Democratic governors "love her," and tells her, "You're going to win this election, but we need you." Then came the ask: "Get out there, not only vote, but if you can contribute, 5, 10, whatever you can afford to contribute to this remarkable leader." Healey closed it out: "Get out and vote, everybody." Newsom also headlined a closed-door fundraiser for Healey in Boston's South End over the weekend. The address was only given out to people who RSVP'd, as Mass Daily News reported. Election Day is Nov. 3. Video: Maura Healey via Instagram.

BOSTON — It started with a slap to a side mirror. It ended with two punches to the head. A cyclist told a Boston City Council hearing Thursday that a driver was parked in the bike lane on Lomasney Way in 2022. So as he rode past, he smacked the car's mirror with his open hand. At the next red light, he says, the driver caught up to him, shoved him off his bike onto the sidewalk, stood over him screaming about his car, and punched him twice in the head while calling him sexual slurs. Then the driver reversed down a one-way street and took off. Police showed up 30 minutes later, he said. He was one of dozens who lined up for Councilor Sharon Durkan's two-and-a-half-hour hearing on drivers blocking bike lanes and crosswalks. Durkan opened by telling the room she doesn't own a car. Her campaign pays for plenty of rides, though. State campaign finance filings show Durkan's campaign account has covered 874 Uber trips since late 2023, about $14,800 worth. At least 114 are labeled as trips to City Hall. And 154 of the rides cost less than $10. City officials told councilors Boston wrote 1.1 million parking tickets last year and is on pace for 9% more. Boston is also the only city in Massachusetts that state law bars from mailing out camera tickets. Durkan wants to change that. Then Greg Maynard of the Pioneer Institute stepped up and called the hearing "a real missed opportunity." He said Durkan's committee never held a hearing in 2025 on Mayor Wu's own review of bike lane projects, in the year bike lanes were one of the biggest issues on the ballot. He said three other street safety orders were sitting in her committee with no hearing scheduled, including Councilor Ed Flynn's pedestrian safety and Vision Zero order, filed back in February. Durkan's answer: "It's very easy to come in and throw shots when you're driving in from Brockton." She called his criticism "a little bit disparaging" to the people who showed up. Next stop could be Beacon Hill, where Boston would need lawmakers' permission to mail out camera tickets. Durkan says she'll file "soon."

Fists flew at South Shore Plaza today. A wild brawl erupted inside the Braintree mall, with men and women of all ages trading punches as the fight spilled out of a store and onto the upper floor. Bystanders screamed, filmed, and tried to pull the fighters apart. A witness, who did not want to be identified, told Mass Daily News they did not know what started the fight. South Shore Plaza has been the site of previous violence. In January 2022, a 26-year-old Boston man was shot inside a first-floor store in what police called a targeted attack, forcing a mall lockdown. Earlier this year, Braintree police mobilized in force after social media posts warned of a planned "takeover." Multiple other brawls at the plaza have ended in arrests.

Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, 80 and in his 50th year in office, used Tuesday night's WBZ-TV debate stage to argue Trump should be impeached if ICE agents are deployed to polling places on Election Day. He called the plan 'voter suppression of minorities.' Markey, who has openly rejected federal photo-ID requirements for voters, framed the ICE plan as part of a broader Trump election-day plot. Republican challenger John Deaton, a former U.S. Marine and attorney, pushed back. Deaton reminded voters Markey never called for impeaching Barack Obama during his seven-month Libya bombing campaign, nor Joe Biden over 26,000 bombs dropped across seven countries. 'You never said a word because they wear Democrat jerseys. I wear an American jersey,' Deaton said. 'We've got to stop hating each other and dividing each other.' Deaton added he has never voted for Trump but is 'open to following the evidence' on impeachment. Debate footage: WBZ-TV.
