TROPICAL UPDATE: Here's the latest GRAF model for the area pinned with a 20% chance of tropical development. The model historically is more aggressive / stronger than others, but does highlight the development of a low in the Gulf by the weekend. Regardless of development, it will help to bump up rain chances for Florida the next several days.

Best way to think about it is that Florida will see a one-two punch. The first one will bring us rain Sunday into Monday with an area of low pressure along a stalled out front. Then the 2nd, main punch from tropical storm or hurricane approaches on Tuesday into Wednesday. WINK News

TROPICAL UPDATE: Invest #97L in the northern Gulf flaring up pretty impressive storms this morning. If trends continue, might get a bump to orange or a medium chance of development later today. It has a tight window to try and form before pushing into TX / LA on Tuesday. It's certainly possible to squeak out a quick Tropical Depression or even Tropical Storm #Edouard. Water temps are warmer than average for most of the Gulf + low wind shear along its track. What could hurt development is dry air. We'll see, stay tuned...

It will help to enhance the development of scattered storms and bump up rain chances during that time frame. Shown below are not rainfall totals, but atmospheric moisture levels. Normally Florida is around 1.8" this time of the year and you'll notice the tropical wave brings us up to around 2.1"...helping to bring in more storms. #Florida

TROPICAL UPDATE: Invest #97L odds haven't changed the past 12 hours, still at 70%. I feel the NHC wants to wait until the Hurricane Hunters get a better look at it this thing under the hood. Considering this will be pushing onshore *tomorrow* in TX/LA, I still would have preferred Potential Tropical Cyclone/System to be designated so more tropical weather alerts and communication products could have been issued. For example, my sister is a teacher in the Galveston Bay area. She is under the impression she is going to school Tuesday (along with her kids) because a Tropical Storm Watch/Warning has not been issued yet. The school district needs that additional information to make better decisions. I have a lot of respect for the NHC, I just disagree with them on this one.

Interesting set-up for Florida Friday into the weekend as an upper level low comes in from the Atlantic. This low will help to usher in temperatures aloft roughly 8 - 10 degrees colder than normal. As a result, it creates greater instability and lower freezing levels...leading to more hail (and larger) along with frequent lightning and heavy rain. In short...storms will likely have an additional "kick" to them into the weekend.

#BREAKING: New video of a (likely) tornado today at the Keystone Heights Airport, 25 miles northeast of Gainesville, Florida. Right now the National Weather Service NWS Jacksonville has this in as a funnel cloud because you technically can't see ground contact, but I suspect this will be investigated. Michael Potapow, who took the video, said he saw grass and leaves being launched up into the funnel. My vote is tornado, but the NWS has the final say. It'll be a fast-moving line, so I would keep rain expectations reasonable. Most will be below 0.50 - 1". Few isolated 1" totals in stronger cells. I'll continue to provide updates throughout the day.
