NEW: L.A. mayoral candidate Nithya Raman spoke with me one-on-one about the growing fight over street vendors — and how the city should regulate them. Raman says vendors are part of L.A.’s culture and economy. But there’s a major permitting gap: FOX 11 Los Angeles found roughly 50,000 vendors are estimated to operate across L.A., while just 687 had active permits as of Sept. 2024.

NEW: Five water main breaks in just one week are raising new questions about the state of L.A.’s aging infrastructure. The biggest: a 110-year-old, 36-inch pipe that ruptured in West Hollywood, sending 17 million gallons of water through the Sunset Strip, flooding businesses, apartments and parking garages. LADWP reportedly replaces about 45 miles of pipe each year… less than 1% of its roughly 7,000-mile water system.

WATCH: After last night’s L.A. mayoral debate, Nithya Raman took time to answer our questions about Mayor Karen Bass Karen Bass’ attacks — including Bass saying Raman is trying to portray herself as an “outsider” despite serving on the City Council for six years. Bass left immediately after the debate and did not take questions from reporters. Raman says she’s running for mayor to have the power to control departments and bring the city and county together “on day one.”

UPDATE: Mayor Karen Bass says the massive Boyle Heights warehouse fire highlights concerns about industrial warehouses being concentrated in certain neighborhoods. “We have these warehouses all around, and we don’t know what’s in these warehouses,” Bass said. “We don’t want environmental hazards or risk concentrated in Black and brown communities.”
